It's caused by a low voltage spike when cranking in cold weather.
You could have a dying car battery.
There is a post by A8tech about a relay retrofit that stops this happening.

I had the same on the real cold mornings. At least it's getting warmer now so not an issue!

    Hi,

My do the same, I did not notice is it because of cold but I will see when happen again, anyhow it is cold in my place, going from 0 to 15 deg C. Brake pads are new on front wheels.I was checking on Vag Com, but there was no faults stored. If this cannot cause some serious problems I will live with this, it doesn't happen often.

    Cheers

I have almost cured this by moving the wire from the battery which was pressing against the sensor under the brake reservoir and charging the battery up.

I've had this happening too. Usually sub -3 degrees but only only on start up and very infrequently. Brake pads and discs are tip top so no worries there, odd but in two years I only changed the discs and pads when I got her and it only happens at irregular intervals. Battery is fine too and no cables or sensors I can see are squashed etc. No fault codes in past or present. Little Gremlin that must be party of the package! Ain't failed to stop yet! Touch wood...
