hi this is my first post so i hope this will be in the correct place,
i bought my first golf yesterday, gt tdi 130 53 plate,
now i need to get some alloys for it with some cheap descent tyres,
these are the alloys that i am getting,
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
and these are the tyres that i have seen,
    number one
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/225-40-18-KUMH...item27af06d8a8
    number two
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/225-40-18-NANK...item518ed6241e

so im wanting ideas as i guess you lot will know better than me, already checked the size will match up to the speedo,

any advice would be great or if there is a better option

    thanks

hello and welcome. personally, i wouldnt get those wheels. the reason being that they are really cheap and more than likely made in china, badly and from poor quality metal. the first time you hit a pothole they are likely to break, then you have to try to get one to match. your 130 golf is quite a quick car, presumably with steels on. if it were me, i would leave them on and spend the money on some descent rubber, and when i could afford it get some proper alloys. you notice on the tyre advert that they offer free fitting, but charge for a new valve and balancing and tyre disposal???. why not go to your local tyre place and see what they can offer. this is so much easier as any problems you may have down the line are easier and quicker to resolve.
    good luck, whatever you do.

    Firstly I am no expert.
I have 17" after market RS6 alloys on my Passat with some tyre make I have never heard of. The wheels and tyres cost £500 two years ago from a place in Bolton.
They have been superb, don't know whether they are Euro or Chinese, Lebanese, African or British God forbid , but I do know they are superb, both tyres and wheels.
I have over this bad weather managed to scuff or get scuffed (blame my dad here too) the wheels slightly. If I had paid daft VW money then I would be ****** off to say the least.
I say try them, don't expect the best! That said mine do look good.
I have noted some of the tyres you looked at too, the budget 225's on mine have been really good, certainly better than the 195's that the car came with.
So I only have praise for after market wheels and budget tyres.

Thinking of changing the VW for something completely different. If I buy alloys and tyres it will again be budget.

    Good luck

    Hello,

What wheels are currently on the car??

I would look at getting so OEM wheels, maybe some TT wheels,?? These fit onto the Mk4 Golf i think?

In regards to Alloys.. take a read here.. - https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=90455

If your still wanting to go for the ones from the supplier above, ask them what warranty they provide regarding cracks..

At the moment I have the standard 15" alloys on, all tyres need to be replaced due to wear, so I thought I may aswell just buy some nice alloys for them! Is there somwhere that I can pick up some rs8/ a8 wheels that are not from china that won't be as weak as you guys say. Thanks for th. Comments aswell, think I will go for some budget tyres for the moment, which would be best the kumho or nankang tyres that I have posted? Thanks

IMHO, i would just stick the budget tyres on your current alloys. your alloys are good quality and strong, as they are fitted by VW. also, dont forget you have to get those ebay tyre fitted as well, which will cost, even if you go to them and have the free fitting, plus balance etc.. try somewhere local, you might get a better deal.

Kumho or Nankang, I wouldn't use either of them after seeing that tread pattern.

I doubt those tyres would last 10k on the front. If you want decent rubber that isn't noisy, is grippy and durable, then you need to be looking at spending at least £105 per corner for brand new fitted tyres. Avons can be picked up from www.blackcircles.com for about £105 fitted, with Dunlops, Pirellis and Bridgestones being a little dearer. You're better buying quality once than buying crap twice.

Seen as you seem to have budgeted about half of what I think you would need, your best bet would probably be finding a set of used genuine alloys on eBay with decent tyres already fitted.

The Nankang tread pattern look similar to the pattern on mine. I am a crap driver but never found a problem with handling wet or dry.

Mind you the Passat is an old man's car and meant to be driven like Granny Daisy.

Mind you Paul the platform for Passat and A6 are similar. Hello old man

Done in excess of 24k miles on mine too.

You've obviously found yourself a very decent tyre Malc, I sadly will never get 24k out of the fronts on the A6 as Mrs B does so much town driving.

You can get some really good budget tyres, they are out there, I just don't think Kumho or Nankang are the ones. I've got Wanli's on the back of my T5 which seem alright!

The A6 is definitely an old man's car. But one that loves to be driven. Cue the rock hard suspension.

    Regards,

    The Old Man.
