I had my 2001 Allroad 2.5 TDI serviced recently at a good independent and all was well except a recurring fault code - needle lift sensor (G80). I believe this relates to the fuel injection system and controls fuelling (?) I'm told it needs replacing and the part is £260 plus 2.5 hours labour.

The car runs really well, plenty of grunt and starts without a problem and I'm averaging around 32mpg according to the trip computer. My question is really what does this sensor do and am I risking a big problem by not fixing it?

Also does that sound like a realistic/sensible price for repair?

I had the same problem but managed to get a genuine audi sensor off ebay for £35.
It's acts like a tdc sensor and possible symptoms could be poorer starting and/or reduced economy. But like you say yours appears to be returning average mpg.
When the sensor fails the ecu reverts to back up values.
I only changed mine because i was having problems starting the car on occasion.

Thanks for reply. Car still seems to be running fine but then again I have no comparison with the sensor working properly. I suppose it could be intermittent. No point in spending £400 if i don't need to.

The resistance output of the sensor is 100 ohms, find the connector on the engine bulkhead and fit a 100 ohm resistor into the plug which runs into the loom. I did it on mine and now it runs perfectly + no error codes anymore

I never repaired it in the end as I couldn't really justify the expense. It's not really caused me a problem - car starts and runs really well. It was an intermittent fault but I haven't had a diagnostic done for a while. Service due in 1000 miles so maybe it'll crop up again.

A resistor may resolve the fault code but it does not provide the fueling and optimal injection timing signal for the engine. Regards Peter
