My car is a '96 8V GTi, AGG engine code.

When the engine starts from cold, there is a noise which I can only describe as a cross between a whine and a woooo.....
Sounds like its coming from the rear of the engine bay, though I haven't had the bonnet up to check properly. It only happens once the engine has fired up and lasts for a few seconds before dying away.
    Odd.

    Any ideas anyone?
The car is all standard (being an Anniversary model it has aircon) with about 137,000 miles on.

My partner's Galaxy does the starter noise thing, every start, but this sounds more like something to do with air, and it only does it when cold....

It's very difficult to diagnose a noise without hearing it!!

Only other thing i can think of is a starter motor, unless youve got a split hose somewhere

    Edit: Coolant pump?

Its quite hard to think of something, theres so many parts that could make a woo, like you said - belt, fan, motor, valve - any other problems with the car? Might help someone ID it.

From inside the car it sounds like it's at the rear end of the engine bay, and only when starting from cold.
I think the hose idea is the more likely.

I'll try to remember to check from outside the car with the bonnet up when I head home tonight.....

The car is fine otherwise, apart from a speed-related drone when on the move. Possibly a wheel bearing?

I found it quite hard to find a mk3 GTi without a turbo mod when i was looking to buy one ages ago, 2 out of the i looked at 3 had turbo mods Kinda expected it to have one!

Not sure on the wheel bearing, not had the misfortune of one fail as of yet! I do know i need some front tyres though, makes me glad ive got the splitter, now that I can tell you about, haha
