They teach you to indicate only when somebody else is there. If you drive a Beemer the only other people that count drive Beemers.

As for learning to drive in a Beemer. I also tell lies.

BMWs destined for the UK have the indicator stalks snapped off as they roll out of the factory.

I fitted a "tap once blink three times" device to my Passat, I get a geeky thrill whenever I tap it so I use it all the time.

I used to carry a small whiteboard with me with the words "Try indicating <insert expletive>" that I would hold up as certain fools forgot to signal.

I've matured a little since then though.

Considering selling my VCDS KEY-USB interface. If you're interested please contact me via PM or email.

I indicate all the time whether there is anyone there or not. That way I know that even if there is someone around I haven't seen they still know where I'm going. Better safe than sorry. Also, it helps to stop me from slipping into not indicating when I should.
Indicating is a habit to me.
The 'blink three times' device is something you can buy off the internet. They plug in and make a software update so that on tap of the indicator makes three flashes not one, so is useful for changing lanes. I drove a Seat once that had this as standard. At first I hated it, but grew to love it.

A small PCB device that taps into the Hazard relay and offers one touch indicating (ie no click, just a light tap). It gives three blinks of the indicator and then turns off again.

Most newer VAG cars have it along with a lot of other marques.

I got mine from here http://www.cxi-europe.com/

The wife's SEAT Ibiza has it as standard, I spent a few months researching and started a Group Buy on another forum.

As I've said many times, it has to be my single most useful mod ever

I am not saying this applies to you, in fact from all I have read I am sure it does not.

    on
One of the things they try to teach on the IAM course is to only indicate when necessary. They would say "Would you wave to your mate who lives the other side of town when you are both at home?" I think this may now be taught by driving instructors too.

When I did the course an awful lot of people complained about the fact that you should just indicate anyway as there may be a car that just appears from a side road. The answer to that of course is that you will be looking ahead and anticipating this, therefore you will have time to react should this happen.

The reason you indicate only when necessary is because most of us just decide to make the turn and as an automatic reaction flick the indicator. What the IAM teach you is to think before you flick that stalk all part of car control. This thinking is looking around using your mirrors and then flicking that stalk. What we do if we don't do this is just indicate and expect others to react to our action. Put quite simply it is to make you to think about the manoeuvre first.

I never indicate in mine, you should just stay where you are in fear incase you get crushed. I also never check my blindspot or give way to anyone smaller
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

LOL i note your sarcasm i also know it isnt 'every' 4x4 that does it, but the generalization isnt far from the truth... it really does get at me when people abuse their size, vans are the other example
