Hi , My 95 1800 adz driver has not been used for a couple of months although has been started regularly until the battery went flat during the snow . I got it going and roadtested recently but it broke down . Once i got it home it ran again briefly .

I have since replaced the battery checked plugs, leads, cap, rotor, fuses . It has a good spark , i can hear the fuel pump energize and fuel comes out of the pipe to the throttle body .

However all of a sudden it burst into life at the weekend whilst trying to get it going - it idled briefly but died when I tried to open the throttle for a fast idle.

Every time I try and start, it will cough back through the throttle body at the presice time i turn the ignition off .
    Is it over fueling ?

A friend has mentioned bridging 2 of the fuel pump relay terminals .

Any thought on any of the above and the relay will nbe appreciated.

All of a sudden the engine ran and has not packed up since , however it has sat on drive and not been used as its out of mot so no distance has been covered since it burst into life .

At the weekend I was taking it for a pre-booked test and realised all the dash gauges and digital readouts were not working . After a while I only had the letter 'F' in the display where the mileage etc should read .

A friend of mine has a S reg Polo and her dash has just started doing the similar , her's just works sometimes and not others. But came into life with a bang on the dash ,i knoew the plug in dash has a overcentre retaining clip so doubt its a dodgy connection.

This type of dash problem does seem common on the mk3 and Polo and even the newer models .

I have read some posts across the forums regarding this , some requests for help had no replies and only one of them had a solution , which was to replace dash .
Surely as this is so common someone must be able to help ?

That does sound like the dash has died, this is common after a flat battery when people have had jump leads on the car, disconnect the battery and leave it off overnight and see if this helps. If the battery is flat, never ever use jump leads, disconnect and charge the battery or use a proper battery booster pack designed for jump starting cars.

    Ok , thank you .

Yes charging a flat battery is better than letting the alternator do it .
Had a friend with a Octavia PD , alternator packed up , so his mechanic put another one on and jump started the car . Off he went and it broke down , alternator not charging . Suspecting new alternator was faulty on went a second alternator and that did the same . I heard about it and mentioned the fact the battery should have been charged . On went number three with a freshly charged battery .... sorted
