This morning I was about to leave for work, flicked on the rear wiper to clear what I thought was frost and the rear window caved in! Neighbour told me they heard a loud bang at 2am and then the alarm.

Found this photo of another A4 shattered back window!

Looking on the web it seems to be a common problem generally caused by pressure around the rear wiper spline. I took off the wiper end cap to find out why it wasn't sqirting last night - putting the cap back on must have started a crack...so be carefull when you put the wiper cap on!

    Anyone else had this happen?

Replacing all my windscreen wipers when I next go home- hope this doesn't happen to me!! I'm guessing with all the cold weather and using the heat elements constantly doesn't help either.

I think it was the firm tap I gave to the squirter jet cover which did it - wasn't very hard but must have been weak already... Autoglass are booked up until Feb 17th but took my car round and they agreed to get it done today...

I think they'll fit whatever they have - if it's a choice between having the car back today or in a month... Doesn't seem that the OEM glass is upto much anyhow!

in countries with a colder climate this is an every day occurrence,it is mainly the low temperature and not enough clearance between the rear wiper housing and the glass which is the cause. You can rest assured you did not damage the screen when you replaced the cap,the screen would have shattered anyway
