Might be a slight crack in the exhaust manifold, worth checking out, when metal heats it expands, so it may be a small crack when cold and 'dissapear' when warm.

Is it common to get a crack in the manifold or downpipe?

as common as it is to drive over a larger puddle at speed with a nice hot exhaust on an ageing piece of metal

Rapid cooling and expansion will cause a crack to occur, especially if the metal is old and has a couple of mm of oxidisation, sure i can see that happening, definately not unheard of!
