Hi, I was driving on Saturday when my 2004 A6 Avant 1.8T died on me. Basically I pulled up to a junction but when I attempted to pull away the car just revved and wouldn't move. I could move the gear level through the gears no problem but couldn't push it when it was in neutral indicating that it was stuck in gear. I have had no prior warning of this with none of the juddering that others have mentioned so it has come as a major shock to say the least.

The RAC managed to transport the car to a local garage who inspected it yesterday and have informed me that the gearbox needs replacing. They have contacted Audi who have quoted £3900 for a new gearbox so with labour on top it is going to cost me £4500 to repair!!

Does anyone know if it is posssible to source a reconditioned multitronic gearbox as I need to get it repaired but £4500 is very steep for a 6 year old car? I will also require it being sent to the Channel Islands.

I also noticed a lot of posts regarding goodwill gestures from Audi, I realise the car is well out of warranty but it does have a full Audi service history so that might help(it has 120,000 miles on it). Any advice on how I would proceed with this i.e. do I just email them via the customer service link on their website?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

    Steve.

If i were in your position, i'd first get the car looked at by a gearbox specialist (assuming the garage you had it taken to wasn't) for an opinion. They may (should) also have access to car breakers who may have such a gear box for a lot less than a new one. Then take it from there.

ok, you didn't mention that. You referred to a local garage like it was just the closest one that the RAC were willing to take your car to and it was some general non specialist garage that works on all makes and models.

Did they not know the answer to your question?

I would have thought many specialist Audi breakers/dismantlers would have such a box.

    Good luck.

Hi, the reply above wasn't mine, the car is currently at a local garage that isn't a gearbox specialist.

Unfortunately the car is immobile and located on Jersey in the Channel Islands and as AFAIK there are no gearbox specialists on the island.

I did receive a phone call from Audi customer service today who said they were escalating it and that I would get a reply within 48 hours. So I will wait to hear from them before proceeding.

    yes, sorry.

Given the sums involved, it would be worth lining up a decent specialist garage in the mainland and getting the car transported there and fixed. Most recovery garages would quote you to do this or there are transporter firms who may offer a local pick up service.

The earlier recommendation looks like a good 1st port of call, although transport to somewhere on the coast would clearly be cheaper, but not necessarily better in the long term.

If indie tech can help, why not get the local garage to remove the box and just ship the box for repair...

That's a good idea I have contacted inde-tech and will put that suggestion to them to see if it is an option.
