Hi can anybody help with my problem I own a 2001 Shazzer 1.9Tdi Engine code AUY About a year back while pulling my caravan the car overheated So when home I replaced the water pump, thermostat and main front rad as it was partly blocked. Tested a car on road temp read 90 on gauge all fine. returnd home after 30 miles to find top hose hot, & the bottom hose warm but only half way along and the rad cold??? checked pipes to rear heater one was hot but the other cold. so i disconnected the heater unit thing thats under car and replaced it with a pipe of same bore test drove again all pipes and rad hot and fine, now after 10,000 miles or so with no loss of water or water oil mix in head tank or sump
it hols time again. and you guessed it,
It overheated again called out recovery the Mech went through the probs of slipping impeller on pump or jammed theromstat or block rad said "i changed them all" even told him about the mod on heater thing under car so he tested the head gasket wiv some kind of fluid that should chage colour to yellow if theres a fault but it stayed blue so no head gasket fault. took thermstat out and used it on hols drove fine got recovery home
Replaced thermostat when home tested in garage after an hour at fast idle and tick over all pipes hot gauge at 90 both heaters F&B hot,Rad fans working fine. test drove 10miles, checked pipes top hose hot, bottom warm, rad cold and water in header tank gone!! left it 2 days opened headder tank which was still under pressure? (is that normal to keep pressure up that long) Bit of a gurgle and bubbleing and the water returned to "max level" after i opened the cap
Now have i got an head gasket prob or a big air lock, faulty cap or a car that just hates my small 2 berth caravan as pulling my other trailers its been fine
sorry it a bit long but i have been checking it for 12 months and still not sure if its the head or some other prob can anybody help me with a cure or am i going to haveopen head surgery and head skimmed

looking at headgasket mate! had a bora do this, only ever overheater towing a caravan, all other usage it as fine, changed watepump, header tank and had a bigger rad put in. still hapened. did the headgasket, skimmed aswell and all was well, until the thermostat stuck closed and the lad cooked it! same as what you had, some pipes cold etc. tryed rebleeding system couple of times, fast idle was fine until it was driven. brought the car off him, replaced just the headgasket and all is well again. there a multi layered headgasket and they leak between the layers so ve been told

I have exactly the same car with the AUY engine and exactly the same problem...... 100,000mls, I have replaced the pump, thermostat and Rad and no joy. Unfortunately not had many replies to my post on here though, so I Have put a post in here https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=101958 and have had some help from Crasher.
From the research I have done it seems that head problems crop up a lot, problem is if you need new injectors it's loads of money and so is a new head, potentially for me it's not worth doing but the head is coming off this week to have a look, here's hoping it's just a gasket set. Hope this helps.
