I have a 2001 TDI 130 saloon and I live in the highlands, drive at night and drive on country roads with alot of wild deer hovering around. Having recently crashed into one causing alot of damage to my car I want to upgrade my headlights to give me the best chance of seeing these things before hitting them. I'm not into modding but need some advice as to what could be done in respect of fitting xenon headlights as I am led to believe these would give me better sight at night.
Does anyone know anything about these things? I have no idea about cost, fitting, etc.

Hi there mate, I recently (luckily before the bad weather) upgraded my headlights to HID's. It's a very simple job, I think the hardest thing you will have to do is cut the clip that holds the bulb in the housing.

I purchased this set http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/hid-con...its-p-265.html and it took less than an hour to fit. There are a few guides knocking about but it's pretty self explanatory and definately a worthwhile modification. I personally think a cheap £30 ebay set will work just as well and just as long as the more expensive kits out there but the choice is yours.

I went for the 5000k kit which gives a more OEM look, however for maximum light output, i'd suggest the 4300k. Keep us informed of how it goes.

Hi, I fitted my Passat with HID xenons a couple of months ago, it sure makes a difference. I sourced the kit from Ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-PASSAT...item518dc4e0d7) for £50 and fitted them myself.

Its quite straight forward, you can access the bulbs from behind the lamp unit (fiddly) then you have to find places top attach the two ballasts. I put mine under the power steering reservoirr cover and under the air intake near the air filter (attached with cable ties). All in all it took about an hour and a half to complete the job.

    Hi mate,
Many thanks indeed. Is there a particular bulb type that I should have? Also, did you notice a significant difference when your kit was put in?

For the dipped beam you need to get H7 bulbs. I'm fairly sure the full beams are H7 too but it's up to you whether you upgrade these too. I did notice an improvement as the old standard bulbs were WOEFUL and were in my opinion dangerous. It's well worth upgrading - not a costly job to carry out, but very effective.
