hi there, firstly im new to all this so plz be easy,,iv just bought an lt35 with a 2.5tdi anj engine, its got a rattle coming from the rear of the engine.once running seems slugish\guttless.starts rather fast n smokes baddly at first, left to warm up rattle quiets a little bit and the van seems to be ok,ish but not quite right,im not an expert but susspect cam belt needs replacing but told it has two,not only that it will need a set of tentioners, water pump and a special tool to set it all up.is this a job a diy man like myself can do?iv changed cam belts before but looking at the engine and where the rear cam belt could be looks a little dawnting, any advise will be gratfully recived, thanks

There are a few special tools needed to do this job,and without them the job is almost impossible. The belt to the rear of the engine is the belt which drives the injection pump

Possibly be the Tensioner or Idler Pulley starting to collapse! Its not too bad of a job once covers off,but really need to have it Dynamically timed after fitting belt etc, although you can get it to run/start ok without it.

Pleased you got it sorted. Those belts can go at any time really! Seen them shredded to half the width they should be with low mileages on.

Pump the brake pedal and see if it has any affect to the noise.Dynamically checking and adjusting of the commencement of injection is part of the job replacing the belts,if the garage had not the equipment to do it,they should not have taken on the job in the first place, and at the same time they must not be able to read a fault memory on the engine management,as you said the engine was sluggish.

The hydraulic bucket tappets can be checked by just pressing them downwards, could be one leaking,or worn cam lobs
