So does that mean the punter takes the SD card away with the code and does it themselves?

I'd hate to think it has to be done at a franchise and we get charged those hours for the update.

That sounds good. It also doesn't sound as secure and anti-piracy as I'd have expected. I'm surprised.

Its secure and to be honest you may require a final activation via on line, the information I have received is still un clear however this is the most accurate and most likely process to the best of my knowledge

My car is back in it's second home at Stoke Audi today, and my courtesy chariot this time is a 10 registered A4 2.0TDi 143 SE Exec with 121 miles on the clock. The reason for the post in this thread is that when I got into the A4, I switched to the nav to see if it was 3G and lo and behold I saw a Stoke Audi POI in the correct place. On my 3G nav it still stubbornly points to the old site vacated three years ago, so this means there is a new map!

I checked the versions installed, and 'Version Information' reports:

    The Engineering menu still says:

So - looks like we need to figure out how to get hold of nav database version 8R0060884J ECE 5.10.5

    Cheers!

    MF.

Ok final answer and confirmed update procedure

mmi 3g nav plus mapping update available third quarter 2010
Dealer buys the sd card with the mapping update (20g) and runs the 1.5 hour update for you then you buy the license which has one activation only (PER PURCHASE) then the dealer unlocks the 5f unit to allow the new version.
The mmi is not updated just the mapping

The now turn left issue will be resolved with a new mmi update in June

The mmi3G+ ( A8 D4 PLATFORM ONLY) requires rsap for on line mmi services which I have used and it works for google weather and maps, the google maps adds to the nav but your route uses the nav plus not google.

    Will add more info

Will that be carried out as a matter of routine (and freely) by the dealers at the next shop visit?
