    Hi.
I've had my car for over a year and the rear parcel shelf speakers have never worked. I have noticed that there looks to be something missing from the left hand one - possibly a connector, as the guts of the speaker pertrude into the boot (unlike later s) it is likely that they have taken a knock previously.
Does anyone know if i need one or both speakers replacing and if so, anywhere that i can get them from ( Other than amain dealer)?
Also can i get another pair of none Audi speakers that will fit instead?
    Thanks.
    Paul

    Hi

I've just been looking at this, do you have the bose system or the standard one??

Mine is the bose and they are 2ohm woofers in the parcel shelf. I've managed to source some more 6.5" 2-ohm speakers to replace them with for approx £30, I got some adapters too.

If yours isn't bose you can get some plastic adapters online and then just buy some 6.5" speakers with the same impedence as your current ones - should sound a lot better too. I think the non-bose are cheap nokia ones.

Saying that, to cut the crap you could got to a scrappy, I know of one in Cheshire that has 2 with the nokia speakers still in on the parcel shelf.

My system is the Audi Concert system, unsure whether they are bose or nokia, but i know that there is a connection missing from the left hand one. Is it easy to change them without having to solder anything?

    Thanks

If you had bose I think you would know (would say on front speakers) there is an amp in the boot.

You need to take the parcel shelf out to have a look, remove seat, fold seat down and unclip.

There is a plug (maybe it's been unplugged for some reason?) if that's ok then a spade connector may have come off the speaker - it's not soldered on mine so should just slide back on.

But to be honest if you do need to solder it get an iron off ebay for a fiver and you're away, it's very simple. The chances are it has been unplugged for a reason (like it's distorting) a scrappy should have replacements....

I believe the left hand speaker should have its amplifier attached to it - could this be whats missing? These are amplified so if that has been damaged or taken off thats probably why they don't work?

I think you could be right.

I was looking at a couple in a scrappy yesterday and I noticed a couple of "blocks" on the bottom of the speakers - must have been the amp!

It's a strange way of doing things though.....I wonder why they did it like that?? Perhaps the output from the HU is too small and requires an amp, be it a Bose one or one on the bottom of a speaker!??

Yeah it is strange and a right pain in the backside if your a novice (which i am!) - I put a big install in my car and got stuck as soon as i got to these speakers! Also, my upgraded headunit would not run them - only the fronts!

If the standard radio has been replaced by an aftermarket one, people often dont connect up the thin white wire (behind the radio), this needs a 12v supply from the radio to switch on the amp under the left hand rear speaker. (this was the case with mine).

Once i'd connected mine up everthing worked fine, but it took me ages to work out.

BTW mine is a 97 a4 with the nokia system fitted.
