I know it has been cold recently and that the diesel takes a while to warm up - but my wifes polo cabin is taking ages to warm up. The engine warms up OK - not quickly but OK so do not think it is the thermostat. Any ideas please?

It is probably just the modern engine being so efficient it doesn't generate so much heat as older cars.

I've had two new ultra-efficient BMW diesels (co. cars) in recent years, and they took noticeably longer to heat up than previous older cars. My current ancient Cavalier petrol, blows out heat much quicker, and noticeably hotter!

Thanks - the thing is she has had the car for 2 years and it has got worse - apparently it was still not warm in the cabin after nearly 10 miles - can't be right can it?

I would get a vag-com check. It sounds like the heater flaps etc are not working properly.

I was coming to the same conclusion having seen a number of threads on these motors failing. Are they as problematic on the newer Polos as well? I have also seen a number of threads about people having found workarounds by switching the temp to full hot or cold - not sure if that will work as replacement would seem to be either time consuming / fiddly or expensive!
