Right guys, where please is the location of relays in a sharan. (2001 tdi) I have just been upside down in the footwells with a torch and cannot see them?
I have just fittedt this week, a new auto gbox to my sister inlaws car, serviced a mates beemer and now might need to send my own car to the garage as the wipers have stopped working.

The linkage is not seized but will be greased after reading all these comments about them.

The wipers were working fine yesterday morning untill I tried squirting some fluid on the screen. (it was Bloody coldin teh morning, definitelty frosty. No fluidcame out ( I presumed frozen) but the rear wiper came on? Now there is nothing with any position of the stalk except pulling for water, the rear wiper comes on for 1 turn, or pushing for rear wiper water, Rear wiper comes on.

    Fuses are all ok.

    A couple of questions???

Any tricks for removing the wiring connection to the motor with out skinning all my knuckels?

What is the inch long tubular device clamped near the motor and linkage?

Would plugging in show what the problem is?

And finally how many of you are using the VAGCOM? is it worth the money?, right now I am thinking defo yes.

So no answers, I will hazard a guess having listened to the indicator relay operate, they are behind the fuse panel. Part of the dash has to be removed to get to them, or so I reckon?, well that is how I have gotten into them so far.
In the middle of tracing my fault but could do with the number for the relay please????? (or is it part of the Siemens control unit?)
My Elsa win disc failed and I am awaiting a new copy.

    Please anyone out there?

So far I have removed the wiper system.
Also by removing the washer bottle motor (which works) I remove a fault of the rear wiper operating when the stalk is pulled for screenwash?

    Will post the results,,,

I removed the windscreen washer motor as that was where the initial fault began......I activated for screen wash and the wipers stopped working correctly. By removing the motor from the screen wash bottle the rear wiper fault is removed, as in it only operates when the stalk is pushed away from driver. The motor works fine so I am thinking it is a fault in the pump? They are only about £20. No probs there.

Fuse 33 on a sharan, indicates that it is a blower?? 10A fuse fitted and as the name suggests, it (the fuse) blows! This only happens when the screen wash motor is fitted to the pump. Definitely pointing to the pump at fault.

Help, or its of to the garage as I am stumped?

So as not to be cheesed off with removing the lot again I replaced the pollen filter and took some pics whilst I was on there.

    Daz

For any sparks out there, I am getting around 10-11-12 V across pins 2+6, 2+7, 2+8, 2+9 when the stalk is operated in various positions.

Tried to test the motor and got nowhere until I rotated it off its parked position. Now applying 12v across pins 1 + 2 the motor returns to a parked position. Nice, at least that works.

So back to the car. Was running over the power at the connection with a mate when I noticed I had previously somehow removed the wiper fuse. (Position 20 I think?) Popped a fuse back in there and hey presto it all works.

Needed fuse 33 to be ok and also fuse 20. Fuse 33 covers the screenwash pump. I reckon this blew with the pump content being frozen last week. When I operated the screenwash, all stopped and fuse 20 was ok.

At least I did a bit of maintenance (pollen filter), and learned a new avenue of the car maintenance (have vagcom).

Long story short. Fuse 20 and 33 are tied to the wipers and thankfully no garage bill.

    Hi daz,

Just joined and I'm trawling the forum trying to find info on replacing front linkage and wiper motor.

I had the linkages freed up at a local garage over 8 months ago but they are still a bit stiff, plus a motor is under powered now due to past strain on powering it while siezed. Things are on the way out basically.

    Wipers never park properly either...

During you extensive adventure into the wiper system did you happen to take note of what linkage and motor part numbers are needed for the 2001 TDi sharan?

mine is an AUY code for the engine but VW dealers won't tell me the part numbers and I can't afford to buy at there prices...plus I'm gonna try and do the job myself. I'm okay with a spanner if I take it easy and think about it.

I've located a breakers on the web that will do a front linkage for £47 but he has asked me how many bolts attach it to the chasis...he says he has two tyes in stock and doesn't know which is for the 2001.

one linkage just attaches with the spindles for the arms whilst he says another attaches with that plus 4 smaller bolts.

    Any help appreciated.

Do Not have the numbers however, It is an easy job to do so go ahead and replace them.
Personally if I was doing it I would use a new part as they are common to seize. How old is the one from the breakers? How long will you get from it before it seizes?
Try pulling a fast one at VW and give them your chassis Number, they should confirm your part number for you?

I did notice that when the power was applied to the multitude of points in the socket it does park in the same position all the time. My wipers now work fine and I am happy to say I had forgotten about the relay saga!

    Good luck

Thanks for taking time to respond Daz.

I have a new linkage on order - arriving Monday...like you say second hand probaby wouldn't last as long.

I also managed a few more calls to the VW dealers saying I needed a new Wiper Motor aswell as the linkage I had ordered and was double checking part numbers etc....once I got the proper part number I was able to get a matching wiper motor for £50 at a breakers....rather than pay £220.

I will be putting in new linkage and new "second hand" motor at some point this week...want to get it done before too much bad weather kicks in.
Its better costing £250 rather than over £600 if I got a VW garage to do it all.

    Thanks again and cheers

If you get stuck at all give me a shout. I can easily pull mine apart to help you out. But seriously, I doubt that will be required. It is an easy job.
Remember the motor goes to a parked position when power applied.

Thanks for all your help...changed wiper linkage with new one last week...all working fine...properly parked etc. Made note of the wiper number and replaced cab filter.

problem now is I have an electrical fault on the vehicle somewhere causing it to be a useless heap on metal on the driveway...just got back form being towed...a local garage fixed a supposed "bad earth" several weeks ago and the same symptoms have returned...

i.e. driving along then suddenly STOP light follwed by engine cut off. Then when ignition on a clicking noise from the dash and the speedometer stuck at 25 MPH.

I think a good auto electrician is in order if the same garage don't manage to re-fix it.

Cheers again, at least the wipers now work! hooray!

    If I don't post before then...Merry Xmas!

    Hi Dazmac,

Just wanted to say - huge thanks for this original post and also all your updates. I've just had the exact same fault, with fuse 33 blowing when the washer jets were frozen. It had me scratching my head for a while, even with all the circuit diagrams etc from Elsawin and tearing the fuse box and relays apart (small trade, but I can explain how to get to the relays, if you still need this info).

This strikes me as a bit of a design weakness - losing use of your windscreen wipers because of something quite common like frozen washer jets could be quite dangerous.

Many thanks again - you've saved me hours of brain ache and work, or the hassle and cost of getting the car to a dealer. Would love to help out in return, if ever there's anything you need. I've had to delve into a few areas so far (and got the backup of VagCom and Elsawin - if you still need it), so very happy to share info.
