    Hello All

I have just used the timing graph on Vagcom to monitor the timing as I have just had cams replaced and am finding the car a little lumpy feeling and taking longer than usual to start although the starting thing could just be the cold weather.

This is the first time I have used this so am new to using it. Once I got the process running there was a constant message along the lines of " please wait for injection pump to fully retard" The graph started to show a cloud of dots at the far left side of the graph and these were below the red lines.

While the process was running I could here the engine note change as idle speed altered.

I am unsure as to how to advance or retard the pump timing manually. I know you are supposed to slacken off some bolts and then rotate a pulley. Is is the pulley which drives the pump off of the right hand camshaft as you look into the engine bay and which way do you rotate it.

    Can anyone give any assistance

    Cheers

The change of note is when the pump retards and you can get rid of the cloud if you like. I don’t tend to use the graph on the 2.5, what figures are you getting in the display box for the timing and what is your engine code?

Its the right hand camshaft when looking at the engine from the front of the car. rotate the pulley in any direction to achieve the correct figure which I think is 2 degrees +/- 2degrees.

    Use Vag-Com Full version:

Engine -> Group 004 -> Switch to Basic Setings(press the button when it's on "Late")

Ignition timing will switch now betwen "Late" and "Early"
On my opinion try to set for: when on "Late" +1 ATDC

Before you start moving the pulley mark the position where it is now, that will give you an idea how much movement u need.
Wathever way u go (left or right) do no more then 2mm at once.
Aha, engine temp. must be over 82*C (on Vag com)
    Good Luck.

PS. It's easier then it looks...

    Anybody who's interested. It's a 2002 model year 2.5tdi AKE engine

Took readings from car tonight although forgot to switch on the timing graph for readings for here's what I got anyway. If anyone can let me know their thoughts as to whether this is good or bad.

1st readings from measure block 004.

    742 rpm.
Spec start 10-14 BTDC. Box above read 2.2 ATDC
Act start 8-16 BTDC. Box above read 2.4 ATDC.
    Cold start valve 45% approx

Then clicked into basic settings and took the early and late readings as follows.
EARLY 15 BTDC. Cold start valve 10%
LATE 5 BTDC. Cold start valve 68%

What do BTDC and ATDC actually stand for and do these readings seem crap!!!

    Cheers to whoever responds

BTDC = Before Top Dead Centre
ATDC = After Top Dead Centre
Given that you are 2.2 and 2.4 ATDC which is within 2+-2 ATDC then no adjustment needed unless you want to get close to the 1 degree ATDC mentioned above. Incidently I concur that just the slightest movement of the pulley will change the settings by several degrees so I would leave alone, unless someone else thinks otherwise.

Those readings were on the initial measuring block page. The second set of readings were taken once basic settings have been initiated and you hear the tone of the engine change as it cycles between late and early.

So is it the first set of readings that you should use?

    Cheers
