Hi just wanted to add i have a B6 2.0Tdi sport and it has got to be by far the worst car i have ever driven in the snow it was totally useless, ESP light permanently flashing abs kicking in and out, out of 10 i would give my passat a 2.
I have ended up leaving my car parked up and had to endure the wife telling me how good her polo is in the snow it grips and just kept on going, so scores for the polo would be 8 or 9.
suppose you could only really give a 10 to a 4X4.

but to be fair, the polo has probably 195 width tyres at the most, and the passat sport has 235 width tyres, so its bound to be worse in the snow. it also weighs a lot more, so stopping would take a lot longer.

what tyres do you have on your passat?

    i s'pose she might be.

never had a problem in the old 530i auto though, or for that matter this morning with me driving her S60 2.0T either, which is FWD, similar size to the Passat and on 235/35 Pirellis

    happy new year

I agree, I don't think its a 'width issue' as much as a tyre brand choice. In laws came for lunch today in Jag shod with Pirellis and were able to get straight out the estate, no problem. Neighbour has jag x type diesel estate with 18" 240's (i think), and he has no probs today. Me not a bloody chance on the contis....

The Passat came back yesterday evening just in time for the heaviest snowfall of the year so far - oh joy!
And guess what - this morning managed to get the car off the drive and onto the road and that was it. Stuck diagonally across the road and going nowhere.
So at 6.20am I have to dig the car out, spread the grit from the sack that I am now forced to carry around with me and nearly completely flatten the tyres and then was able to put it back on the driveway - needless to say I won't be going anywhere today - it's at least 1/2 a mile to the nearest main road, so I put my wasted time to good use and have ordered a set of snow chains off eBay as I'm sure this won't be the last of the snow we see this year.

Rant over - is there or is there going to be a 4Motion version of the B6?

I have snow chains off ebay and they are the mutts nuts for getting to a main road. There is the inconvenience of removing and refitting, but it is cheaper than getting a 4x4 at the moment. I think I will have to look at a Tiguan or something similar for next winter for the wife, instead of her Golf.

Yes, the R36 has 4Motion!! But there used to be a 140TDi 4Motion, which has proved to be handy in the snow. It's still a big car with wide summer tyres, but it is better - as I proved by driving the wife's Golf 10yards last week.

There's no clever diff locks, so you can feel the front start to spin and then the rear kicks in, and starts to spin!! But at least I have been able to get to where I need to be the last couple of weeks.
