    Hi all,

    Oh where to begin...
Back in March, my beloved 80 started having problems starting on cold damp mornings (fine in the warm afternoon or after been housed in a garage overnight), then not at all. Turned over but no attempt at firing.

Changed the Diz cap and rotor arm (Originals not too bad, but probably could do with changing). argh not starting at all.

Changed HT Leads, Plugs (Again about time they were changed). Argh still no joy.

Checked the Coil, red hot.. Dead short across the coil. replaced the coil.. still no joy...

I figured that the ECU may of been damaged after a shorted coil, so got a second hand (tested) ECU. Pah still no joy (So at least I think the ECU was ok, but still have the second one as refrence)

Thought there could of been an imobiliser fitted that was stooping the car from firing (There was a retro fit alarm imobiliser, but it had been completly detached from the car electrics at some time before i owned the car, but left in situe... rubbish)

So the current senario is, (checking firing from the King Lead). Turn on ignition and there is a single spark. Then when i try and start the engine, it turns over but there are no further sparks from the coil.

    Help.

    Having read
    Audi 80 2.0L ABK engine juddering/misfire
    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=2946

My car had run very smoothly, belt was changed about 8k ago.

Im curious about the 'Hall Effect Sender' that kbowern mentioned in the above thread, could that be the cause of it not firing at all?

I am prepared to take it to a garage locally, but having been stung a few times with failure to diagnose strange problems, and having to pay for them to play untill they get it right, im happy to do the playing this time (A friend has lent me his old skool 5 series)

    Any help, comment greatfully recieved.

    Ta
    Gordon.

    Whooooop... all sorted...

Ta for the comments and advice posted to others on this forum, as that pointed me to check the Hall Effect Sensor.

    The actual problem:

Image 1 - Everything looks ok.

Image 2 - The socket on the sensor is actually broken at the top

Image 3 - This allowed the socket to come away, internaly this ment the plug did not meet the blades from the sensor. thus no sensor

Its now patched with cable ties [horror] until I get round to replacing the distributor.

Lesson lernt, I may have been to heavy handed when replacing the cap and HT leads and not knowingly broke the socket.

Anyway, I have my car back and know a lot more than i did before i started.

    Ta,

    Gordon
