You should be able to get top brand 225/40/18s (i'm guessing the tyre size !) for £160 or less.

20k miles is quite possible if you do lots of motorway miles - i get 17k froma set of 19" rears on a Boxster that sees very little motorway use, and lots of stop/start/roundabouts etc.
what make are they ? 17k sounds very impressive

Michelin Pilot Sport 2 to Porsche N1 spec. At £265 each they need to last.

But Michelins do get more miles, i have several friends with 911s and they get 13k from Michelins and 5-6k from Pirellis on the rear axle. Fronts do a lot more miles (22k for Michelin, 14k for Pirellis).

    Enjoy your Pirellis Moe

In fairness the Pirellis are known naff tyres in the Porsche world, the revised compound for Porsche approval is useless for lifespan. Michelins are regarding by most as the best tyre for dry, wet grip , breakaway characteristics and wear.

I'd agree about the mileage - definitely falls into the not bad category - esp given the type /size of tyre - good job it's a company car though as 18'" ers are pretty much guaranteed to be pricy

An often overlooked downside of the fashion for bigger wheels/lower profiles is that the cost of replacing them seems to go up logarithmically - and as far as I'm aware you can't opt out of them when buying high spec models

call me an old fart but my SE with 205/55 16's is good enough for me !
Same for me and so we are both old farts, except that I AM OLD. However that size suits me and the car and they ride well, although the ride is a bit harder than my previous MK5(although getting use to it now).

They do look good but can also affect the ride as you say - my wife has a mini cooper and the golf feels like a limo by comparison.

One thing to remember when buying new tyres is that although kwik fit can be dear, they offer a book & pay system over the net where you can get a decent discount off their normal drive up prices - basically you pay for the tyres in advance & they give you a fixed time to turn up & have them fitted - worked well when replacing a tyre on the mini (horrible hard riding expensive runflats - avoid !)

If you are buying your own replacement tyres then do look at the blackcircles website. I have used them twice and recommend it.

L0L I hope to get 10k out of my p zero rossos after 4500 miles still plenty of tread left in them if i can get up to 10k then will be happy. They faired pretty well and today driving back from work the snow and ice casued hell on the road. traffic was standing still for over 2 hours in bradford city !!!!!!

I tried to take a short cut but got stuck on a road full of black sheet ice !!!!!! and it was a steep downhill road cars were slipping and skidding like nothhing else, at one point i was like oh s*** someone going to skid into me

But i got to thank god that vw have such an excellent ESP system it worked wonders when i had to break i did not skid at all, and when all the other older cars were spinning and skidding out of control i was safe with my esp helping me in the ice thank you VW !!!

iF had proper winter tyres would have been even safer but the p zeros did excellent consider they not made for this type of driving

Having just spent 4 days in Lapland where daytime temps were -23'C I can vouch for how good winter tyres are. Even studded tyres weren't noisy on the odd bit of actual tarmac there was visible on the main roads, and grip was phenomenal on surfaces that were generally 2 inches thick with ice.

Trouble is 90% of the uk doesnt have a consistent winter climate these days, so i'd be forever swapping wheels as the temps fluctuated above/below 4'C

I agree the uks mixed climate makes planning ahead very hard, I would buy a set of special winter tyres for my golf but i would need to do a lot swapping between tyres !! not a fun job when its raining and cold.

To be honest my last car a toyota corrola which i had low profile sports tyres on was a joy to drive in the snow, it had no fancy ESP, ABS, traction control just man and machine against the snow.

i loved driving that in the snow it was just so much fan (dangerous ) but i think have such a basic car helped me improve my driving skills in the snow
