Coming home tonight I found that although the lights were all on on the dash there was nothing from the heater on any setting. I expect this to be either, hopefully, fuse or ( I hope not) motor problem. Has anyone got any ideas?

Eg where and which fuse - I reckon to be looking for a 30amp green but not sure
    Help please its bloody freezing!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like the motor. It is a fairly easy item to replace though. You have to remove the glove box held in by 5 screws (22 inside the glove box,1 at the top which can be seen when the glove box is open and 2 under the panel at the side of the dash, this can be removed easily.) Once the glove box has been dropped then you can access the motor there are three screws holding the motor in. There may also be a bracket for the passenger airbag (if fitted.) that needs to removed, if it does be careful as you could set off the airbag. It is a bit of a pain to actually remove the motor but once out refitting is a reversal of removing it. Have a look on ebay for a new motor, I picked one up for about £6 (Used)

I am not so sure: I checked the fuses and found them to be OK. This morning, when I went to work, I found that everything was working but tonight nothing! So, now I am guessing a bad earth or connection somewhere. Not the thing to be looking for in the cold in the dark so I probably need to wait for the weekend and strip it out then. Thanks for the advice.

It still sounds like a failing motor, when mine was failing it worked intermittently for about a month before it stopped working completely. It sounds as if yours is on it’s way out.

It’s easy enough to fix though.

Sounds like the brushes are on their way out, you can buy those cheaply on ebay, but you need a hefty soldering iron to fit them as I found out!! Trouble is if the armature is damaged then just replacing the bushes won`t work. Better to get a new/used heater fan.

Still running quite intermittently ( road calming humps can turn it on!) so I have decided to go for a new motor. I reasoned that a second hand one might be just as bad so have arranged to have it done next week.

Its the motorbrushes, identical symtoms to mine. Another guy posted these instructions and they are brilliant and takes less than an hour, a philips screw driver and 1 spanner.

"The problem is probably the blower motor brushes are worn out. The quick fix is to remove the blower motor and reverse the brushes (I did mine tonight 30-40 min job) and the fan is working fine now. I'm currently looking on the intenet to fine a company that sells the right sized brushes (8mm Wide x 8mm High x 12 to 15 mm Length). This is no easy task as everyone wants to sell you a new motor at £75-£100 rather than £5 for new brushes.

    How To Remove Blower Motor

    1. Remove 5 x 8mm bolts holding the glovebox in place.
      1. 3 x Bolts inside the glove box
      2. Remove cover on LHS of glove box (it's where the fuses would be located if it was a laeft hand drive)
      3. The remaining 2 bolts are located behind this cover
      4. Remove the cable to the glovebox light
    2. In front of you, you will now see the plastic housing for the motor, it has 4 posi screws remove them.
    3. Before you can remove the fan you will see a bracket which is obstructuing the removal off the fan housing, you will need to remove the 4 x 10mm bolts (pointing up) DO NOT REMOVE THE HORIZONTAL BOLTS IT JUST WASTES TIME (I speak from experience).
    4. Remove the 2 electric connectors (Blue & Brown) and with a bit or wiggling the fan will now slide out.
    5. You can now remove the wires to the housing by twisting the piece of locating plactic holding the wire in place.
    6. Next you need to use a flat headed screwdriver to push free the 3 pieces of rubber holding the motor in place - the motor will now be free from the fan housing.
    7. On the bottom of the motor you will see 2 metal clips that hold the motor brushes in place, take these off.
    8. Slide the springs and motor brushes out, turn the brushes through 180 degrees and replace the springs and metal covers.
    9. Put everything back together in the reverse order to removel.
When/If I find some replacement brushes I'll update this post so you can fix the problem long-term, but this solution should a least get you through the summer with some Air Con.

Don't be put off by the amount of detail I have given in this reply (it's my first time I've done this) because it really is an easy job and it's much better than paying a garage £130-180 to fit a new motor you don't really need."

    That's great - many thanks.

I have a mate who is into this sort of thing so I will offer him a cup of tea and a bacon butty and we can get on with it. Let me know if you find a supplier

    Happy Christmas

well - I decided to get on with it myself. The instructions were fine apart from the fact that I have a passenger airbag so I had to undo a few 10mm bolts to allow the clearance to remove the motor. I did not need to undo the final electrical connectors which was a bonus. Then I got to the brushes! The last owner has already taken your advice!!!!

I have turned them round anyway!

Now to put it back in! and hope!
