I have a Mk6 Golf 2ltr TDI and have difficulty filling the fuel tank due to the fuel flow backing up in the pipe that feeds the cars fuel tank and causing the fuel from the delivery pump to shut off. I have only twice successful managed to fill the tank without interuption and that was by constantly moving the nozzle through 180 degress whilst filling and reducing the flow; all of which made for a long fill up time. I have taken the matter up with the VW dealer and the VW help desk, both tell me that it is the nature of the beast.
Have others found a similar problem when filling up.
    Thanks.

I've filled to the brim a few times with mine (deliberately) without any such issues. It might be the pump nozzle, have you tried different types of nozzles ie. at different garages? Or tried the same pump on a different car. Another point is that diesel is very frothy compared to petrol so I never fill my car at full pump speed if I'm intending to fill to the brim when checking my mpg. That can make a big difference.

Is this isolated to one filling station - try a few - I, personally, don't have this problem at all and I've used a lot of filling stations.

Never had a problem with mine. I just get the pump nozzle into the tank until it wont go any further and pull the trigger. Seems to do the trick

Thanks to you all, I will try the suggestions offered.
Pushing the nozzle deep into the cars filler tube seems to make the situation worse. I have tried various filling stations and their does not seem to be any pattern. The best and worst were at the same filling station (Tesco) with two different pumps. At first I thought maybe a diesel pump has a HGV heritage in that it is required to deliver large quanties of fuel. No matter I will just have to work at it.
    Thanks.

Whilst fuel stations these days do seem beter, there can be some prretty awful pump nozzles that cut off at the merest hint of any fuel flow. Bloody annoying standing there for 15 minutes filling up when the person on the other side of the pump is done in 4 !!

I find I have that problem at a few garages, but it's resolved by pushing the nozzle all the way in to the car and then pulling it out a cm or two.

Try turning the nozzle through 180 degrees,We once had a problem filling a van and the guy at the garage came out and showed me that trick.

Although I must say I've not had any problem filling the Golf as yet.

Just picked up my GT TDI today and due to the stingy main dealer, I ended up putting 46 quids worth of squirt in it. No problems whatsoever apart from getting my hand in my pocket!
