Hi, I have a '99 sharan which has just blown a head gasket and seized up. It's disappointing as it's only done 195,000 miles !

I have sourced a 2nd hand AFN engine from a '99 galaxy (71,000 minus turbo!) and am planning to put a new clutch in amongst other things.
How do I tell the dfference between a solid and dual mass flywheel?

This seems to affect the price alot. Also, can anyone advise on the best place to get the turbo reconditioned and give me an idea of price?

I am keeping my finger scrossed that the replacement engine is a good un.

    Thanks. Chris.

If you look at a solid flywheel its just that.SOLID. A duel mass is full of springs to absorb the diesel vibs, theres no mistaking the differance. As for the turbo, google turbo exchange or rebuild. S/H they are about £250.

Thanks M. Now have a new dual mass flywheel and cluch fitted. £400 sheets.

Well, the engine has been in for over 7 months now and is performing well. Had 58 mpg out of her on a steady trip after a couple of weeks.
Changed the oil and filter, which was loose and leaking!

I have noticed on rare occassions that when accelerating hard from a junction the engine completely looses power with a puff off black smoke and then slowly recovers whilst pumping white/blue smoke out. It takes about 10-15 secs to recover and then drives fine.

What is that about, anyone know?

The oil dip stick guide broke on the original and a replacement broke when fitting. I noticed that the dip stick doesn't fit properly all the way home. Could this be an over fill problem. I only filled to the bottom mark as a precaution.
New guide coming from VW, but in the mean time any clues?

Oh and one more thing, the boys at VW 2000 replaced the plastic cam belt cover on the replacement Galaxy engine with the original VW cover. This has the bar coded engine number sticker on it. I know it's an AFN motor, but thats all, no numbers as I didn't write it down. Doh!

I have looked for the number stamped on the F**d block, but this does not appear in the same place as on the VW block. Where do I find the stamped number on the F**d block? Have had a good rumage around and can't find it anywhere.
I even went into a F**d dealership and the parts guy didn't even know what an AFN motor was! Tool! F**k F**d!

Most likely worn injector pump... or blown seals on the turbocharger hot side but that would hydrolock the engine soon. I would look for oil in the intercooler, a few teaspoons is ok. If no excesive oil is found in the cooler then i would do a diagnostic search for faults with the injector pump.

Thanks Chris. Hydrolock the engine sounds serious! I never heard that term before. What does it do to the engine? And how do I get into the intercooler to look? Never looked there before.

I think I'll leave that job for after the missus drops! She was due on Monday so I don't think she would thank me for taking the car apart today or any time soon!
