Hi there, my golf suffered the seizing linkage a while ago, this was lubed and worked OK for a period, recently I serviced it again but within days it was playing up, finally it died and didn't want to budge even with a helping hand, I removed the linkage and lubed again but this did not remedy the problem, tried the wiper motor in situ without the linkage, still no joy, connected a multimeter to the block connector and flipped the wiper stalk the readings are 11.6v or -11.6v depends which way to connect, mine has the rain sensing wipers, connected the motor to a 12v adapter in the house, motor turns (not sure if it is working correctly but it does come alive), checked the fuse, fuse is in tact also the wiper wash works and the rear wiper works fine, any suggestions, could it be a relay??, where is the relay switch for the wiper motor on this car (how do I know if it is working), should the motor work with 11.6v which seems to be supplied when the wiper switch is engaged?? could it be the wiper switch - stalk even though it seems to be allowing power when actived etc, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, cheers in advance

Mk 4 wiper linkages were very prone to seizing, they have now modded them so the pivot point has a rubber seal to protect it from water etc, mine seized to the point where it was raining, i had to remove my rear wiper blade, drive home from work, with window down, wiping the screen myself by hand with me hanging out my car!!!!! I couldnt budge it after i removed it, one arm was solid, the other arm was free, id say the linkage has seized again, as you have power to the motor, with motor connected, operate the wipers on fast, and you should see the wiper operating back and forth. turn the wiper off at the stalk and let it complete its wipe cycle before installing the new linkage

Hi, thanks for your reply, however motor does not work when connected to the car, but does do something when connected to an external power supply, digital meter reads that there is 11.6v at the wiper connecting block which suggest that there is power going to the motor when connected in the car, fuse is ok

Do these have 2 power feeds?? a permanent 12v feed and a switched 12v feed?

    like on a radio??

or is it a switched earth on these??? try making a new short to a good earth point on the vehicle, see if the motor operates when switched on...

Hi there, motor was goosed, replaced the motor and it works perfect, even though the motor become active when connected to a 12v power adapter for some reason it no longer wanted to work with the car's 11.6v output, I think the linkage seizure overtime gradually wears the motor down to the point where it needs replaci1ng. All the best

Hi, it wasn't the wiper relay, it was the motor, even though I had the motor working when connected to a 12v main adapter, make sure it is the relay that is at fault, usually it's seized spindles on the linkeage, got a feeling the relay is under the dash somewhere, never found it though.
