Yep, happened to my 56 plate octavia vrs when it was 2 weeks out of warranty. So far SKODA have only offered 50% of cost of repair - anyone had any luck getting the full cost from them.

Happened to my 05 GTTDi, no warranty so went to a specialist who only fit VAG parts, the part alone was £1,068 then there was the fitting of it !!!
Went to another specialist who fited a 2nd hand ABS unit for £340

    Mark.
    Water, water, everywhere,
    And all the boards did shrink;
    Water, water, everywhere,
Nor any drop to drink....Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Happenend to me 2005/55 Golf Plus 1.9Tdi Sport, thank goodness it was under warranty. Feel very sorry for others who have to pay for the replacement, not a good position to be in.

A bit of a result in my case. Skoda have agreed to pay 80% of the repair bill. Took a lot of argument and the help of "honest John" from the Telegraph

Sounds like a good result! We have the same problem with our Audi A3, for any others similarly afflicted follow this thread if it helps.https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...411#post436411

ESP light went on a week ago. Just had it diagnosed by specialist during service. It is the dreaded ABS unit faliure ! Aaaargh.
My worst fears confirmed. I own a VW golf reg Jan 2006, done 56k miles. Naturally out of warranty.
    Any words of advice?
My next step was to take it to the VW dealership and ask them to sort it out.
Any help gratefully received I can't afford the widely posted £1500 bill for a new one. Thanks..

OK, here's an update. Took the car to the local VW dealer. Surprisingly helpful. Told them I knew what was wrong and knew the consequences.
They were sympathetic, but I would of course need to have it diagnosed by the official VW machine at cost of £49. I am going ahead with this.
I am also informed there is a matrix whereby VW UK can decide how much to offer me. I shall update again when I have feedback.

I too had this failure at 36 thousand miles, but was lucky enough to be pretty well looked after by VW in this case. The system essentially cacked itself and when I called and informed them of the problem, I was asked about warranty and unfortunately I was 10 days on the wrong side of it.

After tax, I got the system installed for £460 all in (not including the diagnostics), which is a lot more desirable than the £1500 horror story i've heard floating about. At the same time, the chap I spoke to was quite open and mentioned that VW were aware of the problem, but there was no recall/standover scheme planned, although for the most part they seem to be offering a "contribution" to afflicted drivers.

Unfortunately if you have anything pre 07 the chances are that sooner or later, you're going to see that light come on.

Would an 02 Polo be possibly affected? Or is it just stuff on the Golf Mk.5 platform?

Also, are the replacement parts up to scratch?
