As I recall, you need to remove the intake duct (two screws on the slam panel and a couple of clips), remove the airbox, unclip the access panel on the back of the light and this gives you access to the bulbs.

I did this on my previous car, and it took me around 30 minutes all in (I had to figure out which parts to remove as I went).

Thanks ...for the tips...just managed to replace it ...here's the sequence while it's still fresh....

tools required...philps driver, small flatblade & torch

    1) remove 2 philips screws in slam panel ( long black plastic strip above front grill with cut out for bonnet catch)

    2) remove slam panel gently..just pulls off

    3) remove plastic engine cover...the thing with the Audi badge.....just pulls off..not strictly required but gives you that extra couple of inches to work in

    4) remove top of air filter assembly..flat blade to prise the two metal clips ..one at side & other at front..air intake section just slides out of front grill

    5) remove air filter....use small flat blade to release sensor cable...undo jubilee clip & disconnect hose going to engine...shove a tissue in hose to keep the crap out while working..

    6) you will see a rubber grommet ( 10p piece size ) with a plasitc spigot ( spike ) in the middle. Just pull the lower air filter assembly over the spigot to remove.

    7) the bulb access panel hinges @ the top. Press the thumb tab(s) gently @ the bottom to release ( be really gentle with the tabs..they break really easily)

    8) the bulb is held in place with a wire clip....press the "hoop" end of the clip towards the front & then downwards to release...

    9) replace bulb ( £4.99 ) remembering not to touch the glass part

    10) reverse process to finish...good luck

BTW...dealer broke tabs on passenger side bulb cover @ last MOT...they paid for a new one ( £15 )...if you break yours...give the plastic a clean, especially under lamp housing, with white spirit to remove any grease & use duck tape to hold..should be fine

Mine went a few months ago and, as I am not very mechanically minded, I rang my local Audi dealer for a quote - £119 + VAT!!!!!!!!!! Went to a local garage I know quite well and they charged me £19 incl. VAT. It it quite ridiculous that just changing a headlight bulb is so complicated - apparently the nearside light is even more complicated. On the way back from work on Friday (about 7 miles) I counted 10 cars that had a headlight out and it is clear to see why!!!!!!!!

MGF - your description and brido's seem about right if I recall.
I got mine changed by a friendly ********* guy for not a lot of money
This was when I changed ALL my bulbs to high wattage 80w/100w sportzring blue for my main / dipped and fog lights whilst doing the sides at the same time.
I find that the standard bulbs really just don't cut it - poor light output, but not now

I think its a really poor show though that the process for changing simple things like bulbs is soo complicated that Audi want £120
Having said that it was the same on my Jaguar X type - I guess most of them are like that now to be fair

I'm trying to replace the left (passenger) side bulb. I can get my hand to the bulb with a tight squeeze but I can't see the bulb so I don't know how to get the bulb out of the holder.
The back of my hand is cut to bits trying to squeeze in past the plastic cover on the back of the headlamp housing. Ridiculous that it's almost impossible to change both sides without going to the dealer.

Any photos of the bulb or what I should be pressing to remove the bulb? or step by step for the passenger side dipped beam bulb?

I did but that didn't come up. My PAS bottle won't come out through the bracket. It's locked in by the pipes underneath it. And the door on the headlamp won't open past the bracket for the PAS bottle anyways.

Power steering reservoir doesn't need to be detached, just pulled up a bit to give you a little more room. Back cover of lamp will come off once the reservoir is up and back a bit. If the top clips on the cover are detached - small rotation backwards for the top of the cover - then move the cover down to get the lower hinges clear of the main body of the lamp. The pipes are quite robust but don't pull with all of your strength. Most useful tool on the passenger side was a small mirror / torch - then you can see exactly how the retaining clip is meant to move. But if you have hands like a bunch of Lincolnshire bangers you will struggle.
