Hi all. I am having problems finding a cam belt tensioner with an 8mm hole for the mounting bolt. The only tensioner I can find has a 10mm hole. My car has the 2e engine, witch has a 8mm mounting stud for the tensioner. Can anyone put some light on this for me.

This was discussed on here some months back IIRC. I think the answer was ordering the correct part and not being fobbed off with "they're all the same" from suppliers.

Thanks Bob but I have been told by vw that this tensioner with the 8mm hole is not avalible anymore as the 8mm mounting stud was unreliable. Not sure if this is the case though.

So what do I do now then!!? Maybe I could bush out a 10mm tensioner? Or tap the head out to 10mm but not sure how easy that would be?

    Any ideas anyone?

The hole is the head is actually M10 and the stud is M10 where it screws into the head but M8 along the rest of its length which overall is 58-mm. The tensioner for the M8 stud (N014 593 1) is no longer used, you must replace the stud with N 902 964 01 plus nut N 102 231 4 and washer N 011 133 7. You remove the old stud by using two M8 nuts locked together.

Thanks Crasher, Your a star! I have all those replacement parts ready! Can't believe I didn't notice that it is M10 in the head! Should I use thread lock on the stud that goes into the head. Also on another thing, when tightening the belt, am I right in thinking that its right when you cant twist it past 90 degrees?

I don’t use thread lock, it isn’t necessary but you can if you wish. What is the year and engine code?

Yes, just being able to turn the belt 90 degrees at a push is a good tension but it takes a while to get a feel for it, you have to do quite a few and have them flap or whine to know what feels right.
