Genuine VAG cats don’t often fail for no apparent reason, if there is a problem with the cat you need to know why or else the replacement will also fail. If you fit a pattern cat to a car with a problem, the new cat will fail extremely quickly and will not be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

the cat on my o3 tdi failed 2yr ago, well, started rattling, more annoying than anything, but car was a tad smoky, but still is with new cat,but rattle free
mates merc started hissing from exhaust joints, took cat off, bits of honeycomb dropping everywhere, good bashing with a steel bar, knocked it all out, fired up,2 gallon of water shot out of back box,but car went better than ever he reckoned

I was talking about petrol engined cats but I did not state that and I assumed Peter’s car was petrol engined. Petrol engines do not have the luxury of being able to poke the cat out.
