Removing simple bits of trim can be far more complicated than many mechanical jobs .....

How does the front central arm rest detach? I've undone four visible screws and then expected the flocked liner to come out and reveal the next stage - but no joy so far.

From the VAG Workshop Manual, and I added some text to compensate for missing pictures:

    1. ‒ Lever out cover caps located either side of centre console near the front of handbrake.
    2. ‒ Remove both hexagon bolts.
    3. ‒ Raise armrest and remove tray which will pull out as it has clips.
    4. ‒ Open rear ashtray and remove the two screws at the top.
    5. ‒ Loosen trim around the ashtray, separate wiring connection and remove trim.
    6. ‒ Unscrew the three nuts exposed when you removed the tray in step 3. 13mm socket.
    7. ‒ The rear half of the centre console can now be removed and the arm rest detached.

    Thanks for that info.

They have missed out a minor bit in 3 .... as there are two small torx screws helping to hold the tray down - once you have lifted out the loose rubber mat. On a '99 model at any rate.

Will tackle this job very shortly.
