Air Conditioner Pulley

Hello,

Have a very load rattling coming from the front of my PD130, thought the cambelt tensioner was goosed.

Just discovered the front part of the air con pully has fell off and is catching on the other half of the pulley thats still connected and spinning!!

Boy does it make a nasty sound!!

Anyone else had this prob?

Is this on the actual compressor?
Sounds like the shaft has sheared, or the threads stripped.
Usually leads to a new compressor.

Yep,
Can you confirm what pulley.I too have heard of compressor pulleys failing however I dont know if you are descibing the loud rumbling I have got which is from the aircon plastic"fan".

I know it is this as I ,dont try this at home ,stuck my hand in and managed to slow the fan when it was running slowly-using suitable protection-and the noise went.
Strangely I think this has come apart in some way not just bearings as when you shove it from back seems to cure problem for a while-I can also get this fan to rumble more by braking more sharpely.I suppose had better change before i need another new rad as well!!

I had a problem similar to the one described in the first post in this thread.

After some weeks of putting up with the worrying clanking noise - my local mechanic removed the troublesome Air Conditioner Pulley at the same time he was changing my timing belt.

At the time I didn't get the Air Conditioner Pulley replaced, but after two warm summers I don't think I can face another without my air-con back - so it's time I got this sorted out!

So, I'm curious at this point to know if (a) is this something I could tackle my self (as a novice) and (b) how do I find the correct part number for the Air Conditioner Pulley for my car (2001 TDI 130bhp) and finally where I can buy 2nd hand ?

If anyone out there has been down this road before I'd love to hear from you

Just sorted mine today. I had lost the bolt securing the clutch to the compressor. Found a new one, bit of lock tight, Genius

Okay - Ive found the part through a parts supplier gateway (in fact I got multiple quotes all around the £175 mark). So just need to figure what to do about fitting - my funds are pretty limited at this time so I'd like to find out if I could do this myself - anyone out there done this before ? Is it suitable for novice diy or should I take it to the garage to get done do you think?

Dear Sir

I am from Portugal new comer in this forum i have some strange issue. My ac Pulley get stuck sometime and i need to switch off the ac as it can demage and broke the belt when ON the ac button the ac pullei starts to make little noise till it get stuck i would like to know if there is a option in ac compressor to change the pulley or it is compressor itself issue which will lead me to buy new compressor which is too expensive ..

I had similar problem earlier this year, on my B5 passat with Denso AC compressor. The pulley has a rubber bush between the driven and drive members which allows the driven member to move axial engaging or disengaging the clutch. this rubber had disintegrated on mine.
I got a complete denso compressor from a similar car from a breakers yard and swapped the pulleys out completely. easy job to do, remove the centre bolt holding the driven pulley onto the splined shaft and pull off the inner pulley then there is a wavy type circlip which you need narrow tip circlip pliers for or carefully prise out with small screwdriver being carefull not to damage the bearing seal. There is also a small shim between the shaft end and the driven pulley, this sets the clutch disengagement distance so don't lose it.
Don't know what car you have but quite often the compressor can be taken out of it's cradle for good access without disconnecting the hoses so no need to regas. There are also other compressors with a diaphragm type plate instead of the rubber bush but I think they are broadly similar to have to change out.
New replacement pulleys were V expensive ( from Germany) for what they are and most places just supply complete compressor so breakers are maybe your best option. good luck.

my car is audi a4 b6 model 2002 130bhp tdi the genral guys are saying to buy new one and there is no repair , but i think if there is repair one should repair it.

Same engine configuration as my B5 passat, you can slacken the tensioner and drop the AC comp out of its cradle to work on without having to disconnect the hoses or move the lock carrier into the service position, just need the car up on a ramp and the under tray out of the way first. Sure you can find a decent compressor from a breakers or online and just use the pulley to replace yours.
