I have a 1999 Audi A4 2.8. The temp gauge is reading -49 or so and the AC won't turn on. Is there a problem with the external temperature sensor? If so, where is it located? Thanks for your help.

It is probably located at the very front of your car. Which temperature gauge shows -49? Engine temperature, or air temperature?

I believe it is right in front of the radiator if it is the air temperature sensor for AC.

I had this, and i found the battery voltage was poor anyway while checking it so replaced the battery with a new one, and suddenly the temp reading was correct. I used to get -52 to +3 (summer) etc etc just random rubbish. Dont know if just disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes would do the same (remember radio code) as its maybe a software glitch and just needs an ecu reset (by removing NEG battery lead for 10 mins)

    Worth a try...
