Hi, i have golf tdi 140, has been remapped to 190bhp 341fblt by awwsome gti the vehicle has just coverd 40,000 miles..

vehicle has drove perfect, the turbo has been howling even before the remap but the car seemed healthy dynod in at 152 standard 270fb lt standard..

situation now is the turbo is howling and i have loss of power, no smoke engine still smooth, booked in at awesome gti for them to have a look no fault codes apart from imtemitent glow plug.
however they told me the turbo is on its last legs and will go any time?

i personaly checkd all hoses for any splits or anything i couldnt find anything.

at 40,000 miles i cannot belve it, any one else had this issue? i was speaking to a couple of people they have told me its carbon soot getting built up the the turbo vnt? so is it possible to clean the turbo people have talked about that before....

how do i know the turbo has actually gone? as this howling noise has been there since i have bought the vehicle.

and awesome gti said they change tdi 140 turbos regulary.. about 3 a month???
they gave me a quote of £1300

any help please would be helpful, thanks for youre time ....

    Hi Mate,

I just had to get mine replaced under warranty but im sure it should be throwing up codes such as over boost or under boost.

When mine was taken off i had a good look at it and the bearing inside was very vey worn causing the turbine on the cold side to rub on the inside of the turbo body when boosting up.

I have done/replaced one of these myself on a friends car about 5 months ago with the same problem. I managed to get a remanufactured turbo for his for £430+vat and it onl took 6hrs to take of and refit the new one and it runs well.
If you do go down the road of a remanufactured unit make sure you shop around, as with anything in this world there are good and bad remanufacturers out there so do your homework and get a good one and you could save alot of that £1300 you have been quoted for the job.

They will want all the part numbers off the id tag on your old unit to make sure they quote you the right price.

    Hope this helps.

Hi I thought I would put up the conclusion to what happned
Car had done 186k on its original turbo, the service indicator had been on for a week and I know the car was losing oil as I had to top it up every month or so. It was booked in for a service and I suspected the turbo oil seal and was going to do a wear check and clear out the intercooler. any way bang and lots of smoke. I bought a recon trubro from Global autos in the midlands for £312 with a 12k and 1 year warranty, exchange and also under the proviso that I replace the oil feed line. Gaskets and new nuts service parts were £25 from Audi and the job is fairly straightforward. although you have to get the oil out of all the intake pipework which means bumper removal, intercooler removal etc.. - The compressor wheel was mashed into the side of the housing and the shaft had snapped - due to bearing wear over time, oil supply was fine as there was 3 litres of the stuff in the intercooler alone. Whilst doing this work I found out about the bodge jobs done by QRSport who had 'Maintained' the car in the past, missing undertray fastners, missing bumper brace nuts, tie wrapped hoses where the clip had been broken and a leaky sump as they had probably used the old bolt with and already crushed washer - something the last service garage pointed out. Anyway after checking for oil pressure she fired up, bit lumpy at first with the engine light on, took her for a drive for about 15 minutes and the oil smoke finally cleared and all seems fine now. Now there is a bit more power there may be a bit of clutch slip and I am thinking of gutting the cat which will be useless now it has been contaminated. all in all not too bad a job - it took the best part of a day and it was slow as I had to work out how to dismantle everything and the rain didn't help either. - new turbo from audi is £1250 and a days labour at £110 per hours would have been another £1000 so not a bad saving.
