I have a passat in the garage at the moment with similar problems. it only starts when it feels like it which leaves me stranded with my heavily pregnant wife.Vw diagnostics cannot find any faults with it but i know it has to be somethin when the dash lights co wonky on me

well pal the symptoms are: only starts when it feels like it.
When it is not about to start the abs and the esp light up and there is no glow plug light.there is no sound of the diesel being pumped in and when i try and start it the engine cranks but wont fire.at first i thought it was the fuel pump but it has been up on every vw computer available and the only fault that shows up is a spiratic immobiliser malfunction. The guys in the garage say it cant be the immobiliser because if it was the engine would start and then cut out after a few seconds.BIGCOL has given great advice but i want to check everything.I need reliability and by the way im from Ireland

Nice to know I'm not the only one......

I bought an 02 Passat a few months back and for a while everything was fine until one day the dashboard lit up like Blackpool illuminations. Sometimes the car will suddenly (and dangerously) cut out, took it to the local garage where they diagnosed a faulty crank speed / position sensor.

I wasn't convinced so I bought a fault code reader on ebay which gave the code "0322 - Ignition / distributor engine speed input circuit no signal" so it looks like they may have been right. I have one on order from the dealer which I will fit at the weekend.

Has anybody changed this before? I'm no stranger to the spanners but I just wondered if anybody had any tips.

If this doesn't fix it, the car may have to go because losing power steering and the servo assistance on the brakes at 70mph is not funny.

well guys, my senareo is slightly different. my mrs has a mk3 golf gti, i know its not diesel but sounds very similar problem.
my mrs would be driving a long at any speed and the engine would just cut out! i changed alsorts even the alarm/immob, all ht leads. Read on cgti i think it was and some suggested changing the fuel pump solenoid, i change it and it made it a little better for a while then it got worse.

Then Nino on volksdevil forum suggested cleaning the engine breather pipes, which i did and the car runs like a dream...total cost £0 just a bit of hot soapy water... i dont know if your cars are similaly aspirated or not.

hope it helps or if you hear of anyone with same prob
    Gaz
