I have a 96 2.0 cabrio that cuts out suddenly. Wait 20 seconds and it re-starts OK. Runs fine. Intermittent. Engiine coe AGG.

Fuel injection relay or ignition coil has been suggested.

    Any ideas??

    Hi there,

try doing a search on the forum, this is a common problem and could be one of several things - a relay, dirty throtle body, MAF sensor...

there are lots of other posts about this problem so have a browse

Thanks for the reply, Drop Kick.

After I posted my Q I had a good poke around the site and there are a lot of replies on this point.
Seeems like ECU sensor, Fuel relay and hen onto other bits. Let's hope it's not a crank sensor. I have it booked for a code read next week.

    Than again

Good start getting it read for fault codes. If it cuts out whilst driving along in gear, you can discount it being the throttle body. That leaves the coil, crank speed sensor G28 and main ECU power relay as being the most likely culprits. If there are no relevant fault codes stored you can then eliminate the G28 and that would make me start by replacing the ECU relay. This is on the relay plate under the dash at position 3 (upper main row, third from the left) with the number 30 printed on top. I recommend you only buy this from VW and it is available under the part number 165 906 381 and costs about £12.

    Hi Crasher

Thanks for the reply. Parts being ordered today. It's frustrating chasing an intermittent fault, but hey ho S**T happens

Code read result - 00515 Hall sender - g40 sporadic

book says cam or crank sensor, swapped ECU relay and have a crank sensor on order.

The hall sensor is in the dizzy - correct?

    Are they expensive?

A failed G40 in the distributor will not cause it to cut out, in fact you can unplug the hall sender in the dizzy and it will still start and run fine up to 5000 rpm as if nothing was amiss.

Your car may have a Sagem or Bosh distributor. If the distributor is Bosch you can replace the hall sender with VW part number 030 905 065 B.

Anyway “00515 Hall sender -G40 Signal outside tolerance” does not necessarily mean the hall sender is faulty, the possible meanings are

    a) G40 defective
    b) Wiring open circuit
    c) Wire has short to positive
    d) Wire has short to earth
    e) Loose contact
    f) TDC marking not aligned at distributor
    g) Distributor loose / turned

With (f) being the most common problem. The results of 00515 are

    a) Reduced performance
    b) Poor starting
    c) High fuel consumption
    d) Governed speed approx. 5000 rpm

From VW the sensor is around £60 but is available from Bosch agents as a repair kit for less under the part number “1 237 011 124”.

The distributor can only be set up using a diagnostic computer in Measuring Blocks group 007.

I see German and Swedish do a dizzy for the AGG engine for £76, may be a seasy to swap whole thing. Found a sensor on www.probedistributors.co.uk for £40+.
Decisions, just need toget it sorted.
Once again thnaks, will advise outcome.
    Cheers

The trouble is they rarely fail and even if they are completely shot, apart from spinning the sparks they will not cause the engine to cut out.

    Hi Crasher

Just got the part from Bosch £37. It does not look like your picture but has the piece on the left and a plastic ring, pins and washers.
Does the dizzy have to come out to do this?

I've taken the cap, rotor and cover off and someone says the circular doughnut is loctaed on the shaft with a circlip or snap ring. Is this correct and is there a diagramm of this I can use that you are aware of.

    Thanks in advance
