  1. Heater/Blower stopped working

    Hi,

I just got my car back from its MOT fix and discovered the blower/heater does not come on at all anymore. Its a real pain as the window constantly mists up in this weather and now takes forever to clear, driving with the passenger window down.

I'm fairly sure one of the fuses has blown. Any idea which one it would be. I don't want to go back to the mechanic for him to charge me an arm and a leg for something I can replace myself.

    Cheers

    Fuse F6 is the one.

Should be a sixth from the left on the fuse box.

    Cheers.

Never bought a fuse before, do the likes of Halfords do them?

Yeah, they do. They'll probably sell you a set. They're only a few quid though.

Check the fuse first, make sure its that. Basicly, there will be a thin bit of metal (usually inside a bit of clear plastic, but mine aren't). If its broken, the fuse has blown, if not its something more serious.

I had the same problem myself, and it turned out to be corrosion on the resistor....

I've checked all the fuses and they seem to be grand. Is the resistor thing hard to fix?

Well, it somewhat depends on your skill level and the tools you have avaliable...

Getting to the resistor is not too dificult. You need to take the glovebox off. In my cabrio, its just 5 screws.

The resistor is clipped into the back of the exposed area, next to the blower. It has two power clips connected to it. A 4way from the switch and a single pole to the blower.

If you diconnect the clips and remove the resistor you can have a good look at it. I would suggest using a ohm-meter to see if its working.

Then use a volt meter to see if the output from the switch is working ok.

It seems that it's quite common this component to be bust (it gets very hot), in my case the contacts were corroded and I had to clean them up with a needle file.

I would suggest you get a haynes manual and read the relivant bit before you attempt anything.

    Hope that helps.

    Update

Was driving home the other night, heard a click, thought *** that, then felt the magic of heat comnig out of the vents.

Never done anything to it, the blower just started working as quickly as it stopped. Hasn't cut out for a few days now so fingers crossed it stays working.
