HI guys ive got a 99 1.9 tdi AHU the problem is that when i turn on the ignition without cranking the engine the temp gauge flicks straight to 80c with the engine stone cold! if i then start the engine and leave it to idle it slowly reaches around 90c after 10-15 mins which sounds ok, then if i drive it within about 5mins the gauge reads upto 110c! and will then stay there, i thought maybe a coolant sensor problem so i disconnected it and turned the ignition only to find the gauge still flicks straight to 80c when cold. im stumped im not sure if the car is overheating or im just getting a false reading, Any ideas?

Gauge failing, you can send your ash away for testing and repair.
