Hi, welcome to my first Post.
Back to business....i have a 2001 Bora TDi 115, beautiful car (pic soon) and have just today had the cam belt replaced. However, after picking the car up and cruising half mile to the motorway, i put my foot down only to hear a really loud Hissing (like the release of compressed air) the power was nowhere to be found and a puff of black smoke (more than usual) exited the exhaust pipe. I called the garage right away and the first word that came out of the mechanic's mouth was B*ll*cks, which prob means he has an idea of what it is. As a result, the car is back in tomorrow to be fixed.
now, i read the thread further down about a similar problem but there was no mention of a cam belt change.
I have been told that they might not have set the timing right, tensioned it right or even it may have slipped (toothed belt slipped??)

anyway, id really appreciate some quick replies so i know what im on about if the mechanic tries to fill me with bullsh*t. (pardon the lingo)

    I'll keep you posted.
    Cheers

It's a PD right? The timing should automatically adjust itself. This will obviously not happen correctly if the belt has slipped or not been put on correctly (they can slip, did you have the tension roller changed too?).
This could be the cause of the black smoke if the timing is out. The hissing I would first guess is caused by release of pressure from the boost system pipes if they have been slightly dislodged during the cambelt change. This would account possibly for the black smoke, hissing noise, and performance loss.
Your mechanic should first check for leaking boost pipes the he may have loosened, and then for the timing being out of place due to slippage/incorrect fitment.
Hopefully it will be straightforward, but don't drive the car any more than is needed.
    Let us know what happens.

I think this is bang on - it's happened to my Passat and these are the exact symptoms.

It's possible he has lost one of the sealing rings, otherwise, the question is:

Did the mechanic fit the pipe incorrectly or has he broken one of the clips, lugs or housings and bodged a repair?

Once any of the latter are damaged, the pipe normally blows off altogether and they're difficult to seal properly without replacing the damaged parts.

See https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=7056 for more on this...

    Cheers

    Thanks for the advice ppl.
I have just picked it up from the garage and it turns out that the timing was out by one tooth, and the hissing noise was as a result of one of the pipes coming off due to a dodgy clip. hense, all the symptoms described.
the timing has been re-done, and the clip has been replace and so far all seems to be fine, but i have yet to test drive it properly.

Il keep the thread up to date with any further news, if any.

    Two faults in one job!

I'd think twice before using this garage again...

To be fair, i used the garage cos its close to work and its where all the company cars go.
the Mechanic was sound with me and the sealing clip was knackered. i think that it must have been disturbed for it to blow off. But, he replaced it for free so thats ok.
As a result, the bora actually feels more responsive!!
    Happy days
