I need to replace my brakes and pads all round on my1998 2.4 V6 (non quatro) as well as the CV outers which are makinga nasty clicking noise on full lock at low speed. At the same time my inspection service reminder has come up so I thought I might make a weekend of it! New to Audis I thought I'd ask for a bit of help

I imagine I can get all the parts from my local GFS branch in Nottingham but am not entirely sure on all that I will need apart from the obvious service items and the replacement parts so if anyone has a thought about something I am likely to miss please shout up

Also what is the best oil for a 150K engine and finally

Are there any nasty little shocks awaiting that will neccessitate a special tool, new knuckles etc

Thanks for reading and hopefully answering

    Cheers

CV joints first. If they are already clicking, then the damage may already have been done. If the rubber outers have already split, then you may have grit, water and anything else in there since it's happened. At 150k, they are probably worn, so it may be prudent to replace the joints, and not just the outer boots. You're looking at £70 per side + the boots. I ordered CV joints from Murrays - very competitively priced. Can recommend GKN boots - top quality. http://www.murraysdirect.co.uk/

Here's a link for repairing them. Fairly straight-forward. You can undo the allen key bolts at the transmission and remove the entire driveshaft. Good opportunity to clean the ABS sensor too - with the driveshaft out of the hub. http://audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127348

Brakes, again straight-forward if you're familiar with dismantle and rebuild. Only thing to watch for is undoing 7mm carrier bolts. Inevitably they'll be rusted. Spray duck-oil spray release on half and hour before doing the job. Hammer the head lightly, then hammer the 7mm socket drive (Draper do a brake tool) into the allen key aperture. Then and only then - release them. 9 times out of 10, someone attacks the job too quickly and rounds the heads off. Make sure you've got a brake wind back tool for the rear pistons. Check the rubber dust sleeves and brake hoses while you're there.

Oil - at 150k, your car is running sweet. Extend it's life with the best oil you can afford. I've been using Castrol Edge fully synthetic. Cosco were doing deals - but you can pick up 8 litres for £60 of Ebay. Better than paying your local motor factor £15 a litre.

One thing that tends to get overlooked during a service is the pollen filter. Fairly inexpensive - but worth changing.

No other advice really. At this time of year - servicing is best done under cover. Weather is crap just now and the days short - so avoid the driveway.

£70 for a cv joint is not competitive
    try these
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-A4-MK1-1-...item20ad526397

i rang them up and ordered a pair for an s4, cost £50 for both, arrived next day and kit includes everything you need
hardest part is getting the hub bolt undone, you should find its a 17mm hex head so you will probably need to buy one, buy the best quality ive broken a few trying to get those bolts undone

    Thanks for the replies

I mseem to have the tools I need and I had not forgotten the pollen filter (its a pet thing with me - sad eh?)

I have ordered or am getting today 6 spark plugs, oil, fuel and pollen filters, pads and discs, cv joints and oil (fully synthetic)=Lots of money

Unfortunatelt I dont have a garage to work in and Oh yes, I dont have a wind back tool so I had better sort that out.

    Thanks again

£50 for both is one heck of a deal. Not questioning the quality - but some stuff off Ebay is pi**-poor and just isn't up to the job. I fitted a cheap rubber CV kit and within 3 months it was torn. Grumped like 'Dastardly and Muttley' while I changed it and vowed not to fit cheap parts again. The GKN kits include the 17mm hex bolt. Easiest way to undo is to use an extension bar on the socket. Tighten and torque to correct specification with the wheel off the ground.

Well, got all my stuff for the weekend, Question though..... The pollen filter seems to be for an older car to 1993 but I am wondering if the filter is a common item to older cars. If anyone can give any info about this I would appreciate it. Thanks

Not sure? I've got one on mine (2001), and it's located under the plastic wiper trim in the bulkhead area (passenger side). Local Audi dealership will be able to confirm if you quote chassis number and registration.

Well, that was interesting to say the least!

The weather last weekend was foul but we decided to give it a go anyway.

Drivers side front first with an aim to do the CV joint and the discs etc.

Wheel off Ok, 17mm hub bolt OK

Brake caliper bolts quite solid and needed a breaker bar to get the leverage. Discs were quite bad so the pads caught on the lip. Anyway soon dealt with that an on to the upper bolts. First one (collar bolt)not too bad. Then started to work down to the 18mm(?) nuts. These were solid and by now the rain was lashing down. Time for a cup of tea! A quick spray of plusgas and leave it to penetrate.

    Back out - no chance!

Call the local garage - how much to do the CVs, Front and Back brakes
£135 - £140. So do I spend the money or continue the fight in the rain?

    A no brainer

They had to use heat to get the things apart and the lower caliper bolt stripped the internal thread when it came out so that had to be dealt with! All done for £145 and I have a strained wrist and a cold.

I think I found my limit!

This weekend its the simple (I hope) service items, unless it rains (as if...)

That's a very good price. Glad to see you got it sorted in the end.
