More noticable this time of year with the darker nights!

I have an 04 130bhp TDI auto and have been getting large puffs of soot from the exhaust when I boot or kickdown

Audi reckon it's normal on the auto's but I feel like I am being fobbed off, as it's a fair amount which wouldn't have time to collect (the way I drive...)

    Any ideas?
Other threads have suggested the EGR valve, but that was replaced last year by main dealer for a starting problem

    cheers

Is this noticable during the day or just night? It does look worse when a car behind lights up the smoke!! Have you had the air filter replaced recently? Also check there is no blockage of air going in, leaves etc. A diagnostic on the MAF may help too, to ensure it's all working ok. VCDS (vagcom) can help with that.

EGR can be a problem. You could try running with the EGR connected and see of that clears the smoke. Remove the pipe and bung with a suitable bolt then go for a run. Mine was considerabley less. I didn;t want to run without EGR as that would be nasty to the environment. I reduced it's operation via VCDS which helped. Also after a remap there is no smoke at all.

Few things worth checking. If it's a grey missed I wouldn't be too concerned but black some is.

Hi mate, good advice off marco, but put a bottle of Forte, injector cleaner in tank, I do this once a month to keep carbon build up to a minimum..

The smoke is always noticeable in your rear view mirror at night in the headlights of the car behind.I wouldnt worry if you cant see any during the day.

Yeah, I use that too, very good stuff!! Hard to find, only certain shops sell it!

It is at night that I notice it and maybe occasionally in the day in strong sunlight
Would a performance air filter help it breathe better?
I was wondering at this mileage whether a new set of plugs might help as well!

p.s. - thanks guys, will try the Forte stuff, never heard of it but will try to locate a bottle
have used redex and stp before, but didn't really notice much difference in performance

Can you re-confirm what engine you have? A TDi doesn't have spark plugs - only petrol engines??? Or do you mean the glow plugs?

That's what I thought. If you mean glow plugs then no it won't help.

Don't worry about it unless you can see it in the daytime. I assume you mean you have the CVT (multitronic) not an auto? Mine has always done this. It's noticeable worse with cheap diesel, slightly less visible with Shell diesel and much less noticeable with VPower diesel or normal diesel treated with Millers Diesel Sport 4.

A shot of Forte as mentioned will doubtless help, but probably about as much as a bottle of millers over 10 tanks....

You will probably notice that if you've been running at constant speed for a good number if miles and you dump your foot down, you get a heavy smoke cloud effect for a couple of seconds then it pares right back.....?

Last time I looked, the manuals did this too :-)

    Cheers,
    Dan.

Yeah, I meant glow plugs, wondered if it was related to inefficient plugs!!

Yeah, it's the multitronic and on kick down I do get a small puff noticable in daylight after a steady run

It all sounds perfectly normal then, nothing to worry about!

Might try some luxury diesel and see if that helps
Am also thinking about a performance filter to help her breathe more easily, anyone got any experience??
