    HI Guys

Got a 2.0 litre GTI, and it's dropping revs to the extent the engine will cut out.

This only happens whe I'm slowing down, dropping down the gears, and you can see the revs drop as I depress the clutch.

Sometimes you don't see much of a drop, sometimes you see th drop in revs but it will pick back up, but othertimes it drops so much the engine cuts out.

    Anything obvious ?

    Many thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on my 96 Gti 8 valve 2E engine.
Would run fine, idle fine but on slowing down for junctions etc depress the clutch it would just drop the revs to 0 and most of the time stall.
I have today cleaned my throttle body, v. easy job and so far all is good, no stalling.
Just get a throttle body gasket about £2, remove the air cleaner assembly from the throttle body, disconnect the accelerator cable and electrical connection to the body. Then undo 4 5mm allen key bolts on the body itself and disconnect two small water pipes either at the throttle body end if you can get to them. I undid one at the expansion tank end and one on the main engine block, a small amount of water will come out, just plug the hole with a screw.

Take the throttle body and clean it with carb cleaner, wd40 or white spirit. Give it a good clean and wipe dry then refit with a new gasket.

Mine now runs great. Turns out my crankshaft oil breather pipe on the top of the rocker was slightly blocked and was blowing a little oil up the air assembly and also into the throttle body.
