The original plate is "associated" to the vehicle if it is not sold (the plate), but the plate on the car should match the [current] V5 always.

Again HPI on the current plate be it "private" or otherwise. The history of plate changes are recorded.

    It's a Mercedes Benzzzz though

Thanks, yes DVLA have it as the private plate. He is now trying to sell it to me. He did say that it wasnt included in the sale.
Do you know how long it would take for him to transfer/retain it? Which ever applies in my situation.

    Cheers

I should take a couple of weeks to transfer the plate, if he is trying to sell it to you, don't take his word for the valuation...number plates can be difficult to sell and be on offer for years.

If he thinks it worth money, it not until he sells it , ever wondered why people just sell cars with the plate left on......becuse it can be a long wait to get a buyer.

If you live near a DVLA local office you can get the plate transferred on the same day.

I do this every time I change cars.

The car giving up the private plate goes back to its original plate.

I've moved your post to here to keep the subjects in the same place.

You can walk into your local office with all the documents required to transfer the plates from one car to another - V5 of both cars, relevant forms required for the transfer, proof of ownership, MOTs & tax discs etc and the fees.

The transfer is done there and then. You have until you get home (say the end of the day) to remove the private plate and fit the original plate. The V5 will follow in the post - this is the part that takes the time.

At least get proof of the transfer first; the MOT will be altered, legally, by the DVLA office to show the original plate, the tax disc will either be reissued or altered and he'll be issued with a proof of transfer note. I've done this a few times now and haven't yet had problems with selling any of the cars.
