saga continues; car is going to an independant on Wednesday for service/ inspection of cam belt I will update then cos I am getting PMs on this that I am unable to reply to until I have posted 5 times... Garage says that in reality it is impossible to assess condition without removal ( which is pointless since you cant refit an old belt ) and it puts them in an impossible situation if they say it looks good for another 10k and breaks they are liable.. So it looks like I wilhave to bite the bullet but will post costs etc end of week....cheers

Hi BigWills (I sent you one of those PMs about this) but thought I should post here in case anyone else has a similar issue.

I have a 2.0TDI 2004 model which has just gone over 61k. I was advised to get the cambelt changed at the service / MOT in July but when I was told the cost by the dealer I declined (as I do so little mileage, about 20 miles a week).

However, I am thinking of biting the bullet myself in the new year.

Keep me posted would like to know how you get on

Hi Teg ,sorry cant reply direct to Pm until I have 5 posts..I have only done 42k and 5years but under lots of pressure from dealer.. My new independant motor engineer said he would assess it but cos I needed new tyres with service for MOT. it would have been too expensive. His view is that my mileage is really too low to worry about so we decided to do the deed in the spring when it will be near to 50k. He tells me that it is not so much a belt issue as a weak tensioner design hence the pressure to change early..60k is pretty much on the limit so I would get yours done asap....

My Cam Belt was due at 70k or 4 years.

I am on a service and fluids only agreement with Audi £27 a month. Bargain TBH.

Anyhoos when it went in last they said about the cam needed doing. I said no thanks, car is going back soon and i'm on a service only agreement. they said they would check with VWAF. They rang me and said VWAF said 'go ahead'.

i was shocked and simply let them do it.

When i collected the car they said that 2 hours into the cam belt change VWAF rang them back and said 'no, we don't authorise it as its not covered by his service only agreement.'

    eek

they told them that it was too late as they were nearly finished. VWAF had to foot the bill which i'm sure is normally £500 plus.

    hehe

I can now drive about happy that it won't fail any time soon.
