    Hi

I've been losing coolant since I got the pd130 last week and when I drop below the min level I also lose the fans and temp control.

Took the bumper off and the rad seemed fine. Then checked around the expansion tank. The big pipe coming away from it looked loose so I tightened it up and thought the problem was sorted.

Went to put in the antifreeze and the leak starts again...only when it rises to the level of the tank though, just above the min marker. It looks like it's dripping from under the expansion tank? So i'm presuming I need a new expansion tank.

Fair enough, they're not expensive and that may account for coolant loss but even when the car is cold and I take the tank cap of I get a big 'hiss' so there's pressure in there somewhere.

    Any ideas please?

    No mayo in the oil.
    No overheating.
Not sure how fast I lose coolant as i've had the car just a week.

I don't know where to start.

    Thanks

    Cheers

My tdi 130 passat was exactly the same. Have a close look at the top of the expansion tank. Mine had black specks of carbon inside the top of the tank, this was a sign of the head gasket beginning to fail. On removing the head, I saw small black stains leading from No 1 & 2 cylinders to the water jacket on the exhaust side. Since replacing the head gasket in august, it's never lost a drop of coolant.

    i had simular problems
had a sniffer test, new cap, fresh g12

now i think it maybe water pump as it leaks excess pressure from the expansion cap and i seem to have circulation problems and heaters not really getting hot and also dropping cold etc..

Found mayo under the oil cap today so I guess that's my answer lol.

Don't know whether to get the water pump and belt done at the same time just to be safe.
