  1. Question A6 Avant luggage cover crisis!!
    #1
    Ray Drury Guest
Audi A6 Avant (1998) luggage cover. The end attachment/release button on mine has just disintegrated, broken plastic and springs everywhere. Anyone know if the part is available or is it a search for a complete luggage for me?

Its available from the main dealer, part no. 4B9863498B1EJ. I replaced mine last year. Cost then was £21.23 inc. VAT.

Thanks from me also, DGSdale. I just did a search without much hope of anyone else having the problem, and bingo! Well done.

Do you recall which part(s) were included in the part number, all of the end cap and bits, or just the bits inside?

    Many thanks.

The whole o/side end cap & all the bits inside it as an assembley. Its secured with two small diameter screws but do not overtighten them - the plastic cracks fairly easily.

Thats brilliant, thanks very much for your help. I can now attack my local Audi dealer with the part number. He told me last week that the end cap was not available separately, and I would have to buy a complete cover for £350 odd!

i had this a couple of months back. i removed the cover and accidentally pulled it at an angle before its had come out of its housing. the endcap was ripped off leaving the 2 small crews in the main part of the cover and the plastic was broken.
i put it back together and turned the spring to give sufficient retraction on the cover and refit the endcap.
i used slightly larger countersunk head 'self drill/self tapping' screws and put them into the same holes as the old small screws came out of.

tightened them carefully and its all good, the countersunk heads went flush with the plastic endcap (as oppose to being hidden inside the endcap). and it all works a treat.

have a go. and type of self tapping screw should work so ong as the head doesnt stick out too far and catch on the housing in the boot that the cover locates into...

    hope this makes sense.

now i carefully lift the cover out of the locating hosuings before pulling it out of the boot

Hi Martink. Thanks for your information. It sounds like you were quite creative. However in my case the endcap is in bits and will not take any screws. My local salvage yard has told me they have the whole cover assembly for £20 so I am going to have a look at that shortly.

Check out both end caps carefully. They are very prone to cracking & you could end up in the same situation as you are now.

He told me last week that the end cap was not available separately, and I would have to buy a complete cover for £350 odd!
Thats exactly what the Audi dealer told me. I ended up almost by accident getting it from the VW main dealer. Since then a friend has got one from the Audi dealer by quoting the part number. Its the same with the plastic window guides (£2.53 each), ask the Audi dealer & they'll say you have to buy the complete regulator but give them the part number & they'll order them straight away!

Hello again. You are spot on. The cover in a salvage yard, whilst it was the correct one had the same problem as mine. Broken end cap!! Just ordered the end cap from the Audi dealer £22.85 by quoting the part number you gave me so thanks very much.
