Can the turbo removal be undertaken by any monkey with a set of spanners? (i.e. me)

Are there any delicate / critical things to bear in mind, like actuator position etc or is it all fairly straight forward?

Look on tdiclub.com for detailed info on how to get the turbo off, what to look out for and how to strip and clean. It varies a little by model, maybe easier to take off complete with the manifold on the 1.9 and you can get the 2.5 off on its own with a bit of patience. It is important to take care with the oil feed in and out and make sure no kerapp gets in.

Three important tips. Don't take off the actuator or adjust its position, leave it fastened to the casing when you split the two halves. The acutator is pre-set when the turbo is built so that it is calibrated to the correct flows at a given stroke. Also, take plenty of photos as you open the turbo and make a note of where everything goes. It is all straightforward stuff but if you put things back in the wrong place (e.g. the actuator ring) then it won't work correctly. Finally, be careful not to damage or ding either of the impellers and don't try to clean them. There is a risk of putting them out of balance which can cause the turbo to blow up and spoil your entire day.

Scale of difficulty? If 10 is an engine rebuild and 1 is changing the oil I'd rate it as a 4 for difficulty and fiddliness.

In my opinion cleaning the turbocharger isn't a good idea.
Long time ago, I had limp mode and wanted to clean the geometry in my 1.9 TDI.
When I opened the hot side of the turbo I found that it was sticking because it was wet of oil.
I was afraid that cleaning the VNT will not help.
