    hi,

ive got a 2002 golf tdi estate which has an intermitant starting fault,
its hard to explain but it seems to fire first turn of the key but cuts out straight away then turns over and over and wont start, it can do this once or twice and then start or it will do it 30 times and then start, some days it will start all day long, other days it wont start at all its only done 87k miles and has been sat in the garage for the last year and i've just started taking an interest in it again! so if anyone can shed any light on this then i would be most grateful

there are no lights on the dash
    i've had the key reprogrammed
i've removed, cleaned and refitted the egr valve
its had a cam belt change
its not displaying any fault codes

    any ideas? anyone?

If it starts, then cuts out surely that sounds like somthing to do with the immobilizer?

When it does start, does it tick over perfectly? or is it abit jumpy?

    Hi Joef,

Myself & another member (JamesVW) have the same fault with a Gt Tdi 130 & 150.
I spoke to another dealer yesterday (as both of ours can't cure the fault) He said the first place he would look would be at the immobiliser but couldn't expalin why the fuel level would affect the situation.

I am going to find out if my garage checked the instument 17 function which includes the immobiliser.

Heres an idea for you guys,

If you put the key in the ignition, turn the key but not as far to start the engine (the lights on the dash should appear) wait for them all to go out including the immobilzer one, then start the car and see if it starts fine.

Because if you stick the key in straight away, try and turn the key, the immobilizer doesn't always have time to read the chip in the key, and this could be the reason the car dies?

Im just guessing here, but hey, it doesn't cost to try does it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have to prime it numerous times before it'll start.
i wish it was as simple as that.

Hello joef - any progress with the non starting golf?

    I have a bora which is doing the same thing;

it fires once, then just churns & churns without anything

let me know if you got any further

    thanks

    Dan.

All cured, thanks to James VW!

Injectors seals replaced & car has started like a dream for the last week.

Cost me over £200.00 quid but its worth it, even for the neighbours not having to listen to me trying to start it.
