    Help!!!
Got a Audi A4 Quattro Avent 1.8 2000. Had 80000 mile service and cam belt change at Audi main dealer just b4 christmas and now the tappets are noisy, not all the time but on and off.
Someone has suggested a engine flush and replace the oil with castrol edge 5w30.

    Whats your thought's

The 1.8 has hydraulic tappets. These basically work on the oil pressure forcing the tappets into contact with the cams.

The noise comes from them not being fully forced open, due to either using very thick oil, or muck in the inlet holes in the tappets.

The flush is a good place to start, if it doesn't do the job taking off the valve cover and whacking the top of the tappets with some dowel and a mallet can sometimed blow out the muck with the sudden discharge.

    Good luck!

My old mark one had nisey tappets and an engine flush really help them quieten down. As the tappets get worn the pressure bleeds down when the engine is not running and they take longer to re pressurise on startup. I have read posts where some people have striped and clean them and all is resolved but thats on an eight valve engine. I assume yours is a 20v .

Thanks to you both for replying,

i'm tempted to flush the engine and replace the oil with 5w 30 but i've had conflicting advice from a mechanic, he thinks flushing the engine with 88000 miles on the clock could damage it.......

    whats your thoughts?

88 thousand is not a great deal these days, so no problem, on older engines, with engine flush you could move deposits that are filling wear. but these engines are good foe 200k.so no harm should happen.

Agreed. Just be gentle with it. Perhaps an oil treatment rather than a full flush first.
