    Hi,
I just bought a 00 VW beetle from a private sale one week ago. I've been driving no problems but the ABS warning light has came on with an ESP light, both yellow. They appear on sometimes when I'm driving, then go off, then maybe one comes back on. The handbrake is also slack... Are the two related for I'm I looking at buying a new ABS unit, rather than fixing my handbrake?

    Thanks.....

You will need a fault code read to find the source

The warning lights might well just be a sensor at one of the wheels. As kenney rightly says, a fault code read should reveal all. Probably not related to the handbrake though.

When you have a fault code read done on the ABS, I suspect this will show a fault code for the G200 lateral acceleration sensor of the G202 yaw sensor. The arrangement of the sensor changed in 2001 but I suspect your car will have the early unit which is a combination sensor and if one part fails it has to be replaced with two separate parts. This is a very common problem on older New Beetles.
