I've checked through the past threads and it doesn't seem like anyone has posted the same problem before...
My Mk4 has a whirring noise which starts at about 20 mph and continues as you go faster. The noise doesn't get any louder with speed. It does however totally disappear the moment the steering wheel is turned slightly right.
The noise sounds worst in the passenger seat so I assumed it was the near side wheel bearing and replaced this with its hub plus the inner CV joint (because I managed to damage this!).
After doing this the noise had been greatly reduced but less than 50 miles on it is back to how it was.
Interestingly if the car is jacked up with its front wheels in the air and is revved in gear I cannot get it to make the noise at all.
I'm needing to sell the car ASAP and typically have never had any problems until now!

    Hope someone has some suggestions.

I would sell it as is or take it to a garage, the reason that it doesn't make a noise on stands is there is no load on the drive shaft, it could be the inboard CV/bearing making the noise.

Did you figure out what the noise was? Mine started making it recently.

It turned out to be a wheel bearing.
