its not too much bother to remove the top cover, but the only way to examine a cambelt properly is to remove it and bend it back on itself to check the teeth, after which you wouldnt want to re fit it anyway. if you are in doubt whether it was changed, then i would be inclined to have it replaced, along with the water pump. that way youll know its been done and wont be landed with a big bill if it hasnt been changed.i often get asked to check a cambelt. its quite a simple answer; no. i will either fit a new one or nothing at all. then if it does go at a later date, i cant be held at all responsible.

    Dave

    I have had 3 quotes:

    1) Main dealer - £345 (inc VAT) to include belt, tensioners and water pump.

    2) main dealer - £295 (inc VAT) above but no water pump.

    3) Indy - £295 (plus VAT) to inculde belt, tensioners and water pump. £340 all in if my maths is right.

I am going with main dealer mainly because the indy is over 20 miles away and the dealer is just down the road.

Got mine done today. Bizarrely the bill came to £345 - 02. Don't know where the 2 p came from.

That should be it for the next 4 to 5 years. I've said this before but if you see it as £80 + per annum it doesn't seem so bad!
